Are You Building Business Value?

The Building Business Value newsletter has one purpose - to assist midmarket business leaders in their never-ending quest to build better companies. Whether you are the CEO of your own company, a senior manager of a business unit, or a leader in a company that serves those in the mid market, you will find something in each newsletter to help you serve your stakeholders.  Each month we will cover a variety of topics, all focused on leading in the mid market.

We are very conscious that you spend much of your day buried in e-mail, so it is with your permission that we send this newsletter your way.

Building Trust in an Organization
Everyone wants to be trusted!

Leaders want to know they have the trust of their organization.  So what are a few first steps for leaders to consider when building trust in the organization?  Think about using the mnemonic TRUST as a guide.

The first T is to become a teacher ... teach as many people as you can (and make sure you teach the 'cultural influencers') just how the business works.

R is for creating reward systems that are aligned with the cultural attributes you are promoting.  Make sure your reward systems are aligned with behaviors and ideals you value and they all align to business results.

U is for unconditional support.  You have to allow people to try things ... to make mistakes.

S is for sharing information.  If it's not the secret to Coke or Pepsi OR personal information, you should be sharing key facts about the business with those you intend to empower with decision making abilities.

Finally the last T .... Be trustworthy yourself ... make and keep commitments!

Who Else Wants Employees with an Entrepreneurial Spirit?
Ask yourself these two questions.

Everyone should want to have a workforce filled with employees exhibiting the  entrepreneurial spirit. Right?

The first question you should be asking is how do you change your hiring process to screen for prospective employees with an entrepreneurial spirit?

Think in terms of hiring people with the same kinds of attributes that the most successful people in your company already exhibit.  I'm guessing they are entrepreneurial attributes.  So first make a fast assessment ... will they fit or not into your organization. Then assess whether they can learn, execute and teach your operating model.  By the way, make sure a good percentage can also challenge and improve the model.  Finally, educate the candidate to your culture and make sure it's a long term fit.

As a business operator, I have been in a position to lead a company during troubled times.  Concerns over the direction of the company, sleepless nights worrying about debt and cash flow, high anxiety over closing a deal or a transaction - the challenges seem endless. But I've also experienced the highs of leadership - the real joy of meeting client needs, the fulfillment of shaping a team, and the satisfaction of watching a vision become a reality. As tough as it can be, there is really nothing quite like being a leader in the midmarket.

It is my sincere desire that this newsletter will support leaders in the midmarket as they navigate their way to building stronger, more valuable companies. I welcome your comments.

Sincerely,

Marty
