4 Pitfalls to Watch For in Your New Year's Strategy

It's a new beginning, a new year!

You've come up with your three top transformational initiatives for 2012.  Like most leaders, you're jazzed about the new beginning, the new year.  Here a four pitfalls you may run into as you work to implement your new year's strategy.

1. Complacency Think about any major transformation you've made in your life.  Whether it was loosing weight, climbing a mountain or becoming a certified diver.  There was always an exciting, emotional reason behind what you were doing.  Far too many corporate initiatives are supported by spread-sheets and board room logic.  These are important, but they don't inspire people to act.  Find a way to make an emotional connection to the change and loose the complacency.

2. Lack of a Broad-based Implementation Team.  You may be the leader but you're not going to be able to accomplish big changes without a coalition behind you. The coalition needs to be broad at the beginning of the change and deep at the end or completion of the change.  In other words, find evangelists to support the change throughout the organization and then build depth as you go.

My latest favorites

A number of years ago a colleague and I were leaving a client's office in Norfolk, VA when my colleague noticed the back cover of a magazine with an advertisement for a router (yes, this was when I actually had a few technical skills!). He grabbed the magazine and ran back into the client's office and began drawing a network diagram with the magazine router photo on the back. He got his point across and we won the work. Well Dan Roam's book teaches you an even more simple way to get your point across. I picked the original book in 2008 and have used it ever since. I've been able to sell my ideas more effectively without getting bogged down in wordy PowerPoint slides. I use very few of the 'developing ideas' tools but the 'selling tool' ideas are excellent. It is a great way to break away from the death by PowerPoint syndrome!

Strategy 2012

As a business operator, I have been in a position to lead a company during troubled times.  Concerns over the direction of the company, sleepless nights worrying about debt and cash flow, high anxiety over closing a deal or a transaction - the challenges seem endless. But I've also experienced the highs of leadership - the real joy of meeting client needs, the fulfillment of shaping a team, and the satisfaction of watching a vision become a reality. As tough as it can be, there is really nothing quite like being a leader in the midmarket.

It is my sincere desire that this newsletter will support leaders in the midmarket as they navigate their way to building stronger, more valuable companies. I welcome your comments.

Sincerely,

Marty
