We are very conscious that you spend much of your day buried in e-mail, so it is with your permission that we send this newsletter your way.

Your Top 10 Key Success Factors
Create Alignment Among Your Leadership Team

Have you ever been working in your yard, spotted your nosey neighbor Lenny heading your way, and resigned yourself that you were going to learn something you already know?   You already know your gutters need cleaning, and you're not really that keen on getting a lesson in rain gutter management from Lenny!

You may have had that same feeling when an outsider comes into your business.  You know your AR is out of control.  You know sales have dropped for 6 consecutive months.  You know you're vulnerable in the Northeast region but you'd just rather not be reminded about it from some outsider.

Here is a cure for your insecure ailments.  During your next operations or staff meeting, get your leadership team thinking about the key success factors for your company.  In other words, what are the ten key factors that must be in place for your company to be a success.

Off BalanceMatthew Kelly gets it! After listening to Urban Meyer, the new Ohio State football coach talk about his lack of balance during his tenure at the University of Florida, I was reminded of how Matthew Kelly's new book, "Off Balance" blows ups the myth of work-life balance. Kelly asks us to dig deep and consider what really satisfies us. Be prepared to ask yourself tough cultural questions. Am I overly concerned about "what's in it for me"? Do I confuse pleasure with happiness? Do I even know the difference? Do I do the minimum amount of work to just get by? I especially like how Kelly addresses life. It's not segmented into work, family, sports, fitness, spiritual, financial, etc .... life is life. The more we learn how to get beyond the balance myth, the better off, and more satisfying, our lives will be. "Off Balance" is a great book to add to your 2012 reading list!

Strategy 2012

As a business operator, I have been in a position to lead a company during troubled times.  Concerns over the direction of the company, sleepless nights worrying about debt and cash flow, high anxiety over closing a deal or a transaction - the challenges seem endless. But I've also experienced the highs of leadership - the real joy of meeting client needs, the fulfillment of shaping a team, and the satisfaction of watching a vision become a reality. As tough as it can be, there is really nothing quite like being a leader in the midmarket.

It is my sincere desire that this newsletter will support leaders in the midmarket as they navigate their way to building stronger, more valuable companies. I welcome your comments.

Sincerely,

Marty
