Leaders are on Stage
|
I am very privileged to spend most of my time with very good leaders. And when you have the opportunity to 'watch leadership', you come away convinced that the best leaders are always 'on'. Like actors on a stage, leaders know they are always being watched. Is the company in trouble? Are we doing well?
Most of us don't get the chance to observe leadership because we are in the thick of things but when everyone in your organization believes in you as a leader, a high level of trust develops in your organization.

Growth Strategy in a Box
Developing an Actionable and Collaborative Strategy in a Week
"Growth Strategy in a Box" is a short but intense planning process designed to establish a clear direction and create alignment among the company's leadership. The lack of a clear, concise, and actionable direction often leaves company leadership rudderless. Our four step process will create three transformational, strategic initiatives based on your current situation, the market conditions, and your long range objectives. when executed, each initiative will move your company in the right direction.

Good Reads .....
|
I picked this 2005 book up on the discount rack and I'm so glad I did. I'm predisposed to reading anything about Teddy Roosevelt but this may be the best book I've ever read on the former President. Candice Millard captures the contrasting leadership styles of Roosevelt and the Brazilian commander Rondon and their opposing views of mission and risk. What you'll find intriguing about this book is the adventure, diplomacy, survival skills of the men on the expedition and the contrast among turn of the century explorers, and indigenous native populations using stone aged tools and how we live today. A great read!

The Courage to Communicate
Tell it like it is! |
Courage is not a word we often banty about in conference rooms and cubicles. Websters defines courage as the mental or moral strength to venture, persevere, and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. But taken in the context of business leadership, courage can also be defined as the ability to talk to employees about what matters to them - and to tell it like it is.
Facing the economic challenges of shifting market conditions can be a drain for most leaders. But consider the emotional toll on the workforce. Leadership holds most of the cards. They generally have a feel for the challenges ahead and certainly understand their current financial position. Employees, on the other hand, are generally left wondering. Is the company doing well? Will there be layoffs and other cost cutting measures?

As a business operator, I have been in a position to lead a company during troubled times. Concerns over the direction of the company, sleepless nights worrying about debt and cash flow, high anxiety over closing a deal or a transaction - the challenges seem endless. But I've also experienced the highs of leadership - the real joy of meeting client needs, the fulfillment of shaping a team, and the satisfaction of watching a vision become a reality. As tough as it can be, there is really nothing quite like being a leader in the midmarket.
It is my sincere desire that this newsletter will support leaders in the midmarket as they navigate their way to building stronger, more valuable companies. I welcome your comments.
Sincerely,
Marty
