Are You Building Business Value?

The Building Business Value newsletter has one purpose - to assist midmarket business leaders in their never-ending quest to build better companies. Whether you are the CEO of your own company, a senior manager of a business unit, or a leader in a company that serves those in the mid market, you will find something in each newsletter to help you serve your stakeholders.  Each month we will cover a variety of topics, all focused on leading in the mid market.

We are very conscious that you spend much of your day buried in e-mail, so it is with your permission that we send this newsletter your way.

What's Your Passion?
Find your passion and you'll find your voice!

When was the last time you left a meeting saying to yourself, "that person is definitely passionate about what they do."  If you are struggling with any recent recollections, you may have also fallen into the same milk toast, vanilla pudding quagmire yourself!

What do you feel passionate about in your company?  Ask yourself what aspect of your mission you feel deeply about.  What's at stake? What results do you want your service or product or company to produce? Who will benefit?

Begin to focus not on what you want to say, but on why you're speaking in the first place and how you feel about it. (I once listened to a speech by a CTO who said the difference between his firm and all the other tech firms in the market was the passion with which his firm delivered its services-and he said it with passion! I was convinced!)

Passion moves people to action.  Passion is the glue that connects the emotion of a problem with the action to make something happen.  Passion gives life to the unengaged and purpose to the wandering masses.

Find your passion and you'll find your voice!

Six Tires No Plan I have to admit, this was an impulse buy. Who could resist a book with a title like this and a cover sporting a man wearing a derby and a tire dress! Well, this impulse was correct. Bruce Halle, the founder and CEO of the Discount Tire Company, of course is the hero of this book and a very inspirational business figure. In fact, he is a very inspirational figure outside of his business success and what makes him, or any other business leader stand out is his ability to assess every situation and filter that situation though his very well defined set of personal values. The book is part travelogue and part business strategy. What makes it come to life is that Halle's formative years heavily influenced his notion of what motivates, inspires and encourages people people to do their best every day. No seven step plans in this book, only an elementary but essential lesson for all leaders that says that your plan starts with your values!

Can You Lead Without A Crisis?
Do you wait for the crisis or do you prepare when given the opportunity?

Winston Churchill's famous quote "You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else" suggests that American's respond well to a crisis.  That of course, is a kind interpretation  and in general, a good thing, but we shouldn't postpone our tough decisions until a crisis is upon us.

One of my favorite Civil War stories details the leadership of a 60 year-old civil engineer turned soldier, by the name of General George S. Greene.  It was Greene's defense of the right flank of Culp's Hill in Gettysburg that stands out as the ultimate lesson of preparing for the inevitable changes in any battle.

As a business operator, I have been in a position to lead a company during troubled times.  Concerns over the direction of the company, sleepless nights worrying about debt and cash flow, high anxiety over closing a deal or a transaction - the challenges seem endless. But I've also experienced the highs of leadership - the real joy of meeting client needs, the fulfillment of shaping a team, and the satisfaction of watching a vision become a reality. As tough as it can be, there is really nothing quite like being a leader in the midmarket.

It is my sincere desire that this newsletter will support leaders in the midmarket as they navigate their way to building stronger, more valuable companies. I welcome your comments.

Sincerely,

Marty
