Are You Building Business Value?

The Building Business Value newsletter has one purpose - to assist midmarket business leaders in their never-ending quest to build better companies. Whether you are the CEO of your own company, a senior manager of a business unit, or a leader in a company that serves those in the mid market, you will find something in each newsletter to help you serve your stakeholders.  Each month we will cover a variety of topics, all focused on leading in the mid market.

We are very conscious that you spend much of your day buried in e-mail, so it is with your permission that we send this newsletter your way.

Here's Why You Should Share Information with your Employees.
It's basic knowledge.
How does sharing information empower employees?

Think about trying to fix a stalled car without the basic knowledge of auto mechanics.  Sharing information and teaching your employees how the enterprise works allows them to make solid business decisions while they are in the heat of the moment.  Equipped with the right information, they'll know not to discount a deal or to push hard for an end of month sale because they'll understand what it means to the company and what it can also mean for them.

The Last Stand I read Nathaniel Philbrick's "Sea of Glory" a couple of years ago and was impressed with his ability to make history read like a page-turning novel. In "The Last Stand", Philbrick does it again. If anyone ever wondered if leadership matters, this book grabs you by the shoulders and screams out 'yes'. Not just the leadership abilities of Custer and Sitting Bull in the heat of battle, but the character and competency that go into preparation and execution for mundane tasks (necessary for ultimate success) as well as heroic actions. Business leaders may ask themselves if they really know the abilities, interests and motivators of everyone that works for them. Will your leaders stand up and do the right thing or wilt and fade into the background? In Custer's last stand, the military's second tier leadership failed while Sitting Bull's empowered chief's took action. What kind of leaders do you have?

You Can Only Choose Three.
These three changes will really drive value going forward.

I agree with Warren Bennis, one of our great business scholars, when he says "Leadership is the ability to translate vision into reality."  You've been working on your company's direction and strategy.  You've done a good job of taking an honest assessment of your current situation and you've also painted a vibrant picture of the future.  Now it's time to complete the gap analysis and create a list of potential transformational initiatives.  You and your leadership team have to buckle down and make some hard decisions. It's time to take action and build toward your vision of the future.

Let me warn you however, that the choices get harder because now you have to pick only three.  Just three transformational initiatives out of the myriad of options you uncovered during your planning session.  These will be the three changes that will really drive value going forward.

As a business operator, I have been in a position to lead a company during troubled times.  Concerns over the direction of the company, sleepless nights worrying about debt and cash flow, high anxiety over closing a deal or a transaction - the challenges seem endless. But I've also experienced the highs of leadership - the real joy of meeting client needs, the fulfillment of shaping a team, and the satisfaction of watching a vision become a reality. As tough as it can be, there is really nothing quite like being a leader in the midmarket.

It is my sincere desire that this newsletter will support leaders in the midmarket as they navigate their way to building stronger, more valuable companies. I welcome your comments.

Sincerely,

Marty
