- Short descriptions of our archived newsletters
- Each newsletter discusses various topics related to business operations, strategy and life in general.
- On Time, On Budget. EC Newsletter Issue 73: 11 Dec 2012. (12/11/2012)
- Hallmark of Operational Efficiency, and implies that what we are doing should also be effective, in the eyes of many. Business units are praised when they are On-Time and On-Budget. It means that they have delivered puissant performance. Any business leader would be pleased with that! It means sterling service, satisfied customers and stellar profits.
- Manpower Matters. EC Newsletter Issue 72: 04 Dec 2012. (12/4/2012)
- We have been seeing this in the news a lot recently, centered around a strike by SMRT bus drivers. Besides the news about the arrests, repatriations and other things, SMRT has been told to "...take greater care with HR matters..."
- 9 Things Bosses SHOULD Say To Employees. EC Newsletter Issue 71: 27 Nov 2012 (11/27/2012)
- Someone shared this article on LinkedIn, and it happened to catch my eye. You can read the article here. I thought that the nine things NOT to say to your employees were a good reminder for bosses. Then I thought that they ought to be complemented by 9 things Bosses OUGHT to say to their employees to make a complete picture. Here they are.
- Quantum Leaps. EC Newsletter Issue 70: 20 Nov 2012 (11/20/2012)
- Heard of the term "Quantum"? Quantum improvements. Quantum leaps. Quantum shifts. Quantum this. Quantum that. Now, what IS a "quantum", anyway? If you really don't know, go to the dictionary and you will see that it means:
- The Attitude Of Gratitude Is In! EC Newsletter Issue 69: 14 Nov 2012 (11/14/2012)
- That's right, it's IN! As in INgratitude, that is. Recent news about Alvin Tan and his online disclosures seem to have many people talking about the attitude of gratitude. Or should I say INgratitude?
- Self Esteem In Leaders. Overused? Vilified? EC Newsletter Issue 68: 06 Nov 2012. (11/6/2012)
- If you are a leader, read this with a view to being better equipped to grow yourself. It is only when we grow that we are able to help others. If you don't think you're a leader, I've got news for you - you had better be, because you are already a leader if you know people younger than yourself!
- Encourage Your People! EC Newsletter Issue 67: 30 Oct 2012. (10/30/2012)
- Most leaders I know want to be popular. Do you? At the same time, they recognize that they need to make their organizations profitable. Even a non-profit has to be profitable in terms of the value it delivers and how true it stays to its purpose. In wanting both to be popular and to be profitable at the same time, many leaders face what are probably unnecessary dilemmas.
- Wisdom. Why We Still Need Leaders. EC Newsletter Issue 66: 23 Oct 2012. (10/23/2012)
- With the rise of the internet and the proliferation of mobile devices permitting us to be connected to vast information resources from virtually anywhere, "downloading" of information from person to person may seem to have taken a back seat.
- PR Points For Public Relations. EC Newsletter Issue 65: 16 Oct 2012. (10/16/2012)
- Recently, a potential business ally has been trying to interest me in Public Relations. My previous Public Relations experiences were all measurable numbers. 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm, 9 mm, 40 mm, to 155 mm. Which is to say, nada. To address the nada issue, I started to look up references on the subject.
- Export of Talent? EC Newsletter Issue 64: 09 Oct 2012. (10/9/2012)
- It seems that some of us in Singapore are concerned with the export of local talent. Singapore Business Review reported that according to a survey conducted by the Chartered Institute of Personnel & Development (CIPD) and the Hong Kong Institute of Human Resource Management (HKIHRM), we fear a dearth of local talent by the year 2017.
- Missing: Rugged Singaporean. EC Newsletter Issue 63: 25 Sep 2012. (9/24/2012)
- I remember that we used to have photos and cartoon illustrations of this person called the "Rugged Singaporean". Have you seen him lately? He seems to have gone missing! I can't even find him on google!
- Deliberate Delegation. EC Newsletter Issue 62: 18 Sep 2012. (9/17/2012)
- Is the word "delegation" a dreaded word at your workplace? If you are a leader, do you know who, what, where, when and why to delegate? If you are a staff member, do you look forward to your leader delegating tasks, responsibilities, etc, to you? Is "delegation" at your workplace perceived positively or otherwise? Do you wish you were better at delegating, regardless of whether you are a leader or staff member?
- I, Leader. EC Newsletter Issue 61: 11 Sep 2012. (9/11/2012)
- Yes, it is the twelfth anniversary of 911 today. For the last twelve years, stepped-up security has become the norm throughout. Fear and suspicion have increased over trust and building relationships. Whole nations penalized because of the actions of a few. Do you think this is so? I say that cultures which were once known for building good character in their people have fallen into decay, and external authoritarian control mechanisms have insidiously been tightening their tentacles and filling every available nook and cranny in society. If ever a time was when character-centric leaders needed to make their presence felt, it is now.
- WSNH!!!. EC Newsletter Issue 60: 04 Sep 2012. (9/3/2012)
- Do you know the saying "Work Smarter, Not Harder"? Do you subscribe to it? Most of you would say "Yes", right? Well, I don't! I seriously think that the saying "Work Smarter, Not Harder" has done humanity a grave injustice, and here's why.
- Congruency. A Genuine Necessity. EC Newsletter Issue 59: 28 Aug 2012. (8/27/2012)
- Last week, I was listening to Episode 270 of the official BNI podcast, an episode I found very enjoyable and which resonated very well with what Elijah Consulting is all about. The title of the podcast was "Congruent in Words and Actions". You can listen to it here: http://bit.ly/SUtg4X. I'd like to say this again - whether or not you're a BNI member, do make time to listen to these podcasts.
- The Mediation & Arbitration Unit (MAU). EC Newsletter Issue 58: 21 Au (8/21/2012)
- The acronym "MAU" used to have two meanings for me. The first was "Marine Amphibious Unit", which was essentially a Marine Battalion of the Fleet Marine Force that was readily deployable, and the second was a reference to the Mau Mau street gang referred to by NIcky Cruz in his book "Run, Baby, Run". Today, I have a new meaning for it - Mediation & Arbitration Unit.
- The Master Weapon - Business Perspectives. SA Newsletter Issue 57: 14 Aug 2012. (8/14/2012)
- During the period 1991 - 1992, I happened to come across an article in the Jan 1991 issue of Military Review titled "The Master Weapon: The Tactical Thought of J.F.C. Fuller Applied to Future War" by a then-Major Anthony M. Coroalles, US Army. It was this article that got me reading J.F.C. Fuller's writings, and it benefited me tremendously during my tenure in the Armed Forces. For those who wish to read more, there is a link to the article here. You could also refer to the SAFTI MI Library for the original version.
- Mission: Impossible. Almost. SA Newsletter Issue 56: 07 Aug 2012. (8/7/2012)
- Yes, "Mission Impossible" does go back quite a long way, and, yes, it existed before Tom Cruise. When you think of "Mission Impossible", what comes to your mind? Elite teams engaging in superhuman feats? Suicide squads on "Do or Die" missions? What about you, have you ever faced your own "Mission Impossible"?
- Minimizing risk. Managing risk. SA Newsletter Issue 55: 31 Jul 2012. (7/31/2012)
- The opposite of minimizing risk is maximizing risk. Oh, good, you're awake! No, the opposite of minimizing risk is managing risk, of course! As the saying goes, "Nothing ventured, nothing gained." In the movie clip, President Roosevelt ordered a strike against the Japanese heartland following the attack on Pearl Harbor.
