Missing: Rugged Singaporean. EC Newsletter Issue 63: 25 Sep 2012

Greetings!
I remember that we used to have photos and cartoon illustrations of this person called the "Rugged Singaporean". Have you seen him lately? He seems to have gone missing! I can't even find him on google! As I recall, the "Rugged Singaporean" was physically and mentally fit, was adept at problem-solving and did not turn his nose up at work many would regard as menial. Can we organize a search party for him? A Singapore Business Review writeup, "Check out why companies want to hire non-Singaporeans" caught my eye. Please go to it and read it for yourself. My message to most of you is "Stop whining and start becoming workers of value!" I care not if you take charge of an office pantry or are a top-flight CEO waiting to be poached by the next Fortune 500 company. Whatever it is that you do, does your employer look forward to you coming to work? Do your people welcome your visits or are you a dark cloud of dread to be endured? Smart hiring managers and smart bosses don't hire on price, they hire on value and culture fit. Remember, the cost of a turnover can be the equivalent of one to two years salary for a mid-level executive! So, a smart company would want to hire good people who would stay and grow with them. Look at the fan of certificates and other such qualifications in your hand now, my friend. Ask yourself realistically how that would impress you if you are a smart employer. One of my former bosses said that this was exactly what he faced when he became a hiring manager for a large organization. He would encounter people coming in and placing their paper qualifications on the table like a fan of cards. They'd get hired, of course. What often happened after six months was they would get fired or they'd have left the company and gone somewhere else. You get the picture. Finally, stop blaming Gen Y for your HR ills. Statistics are statistics. They are factual, they do not lie, and they serve no purpose unless you do something about them. Recognize the characteristics of any Gen as a backdrop, by all means, but zoom in on the PERSON sitting in the interviewee's chair in front of you. If you, Singaporean, are THAT person in the interviewee's chair, pray tell me, why should I hire you instead of the foreign talent I saw before you came in? Chew on that, and please come up with some good answers that are real and not concocted. Or are you that "Rugged Singaporean" gone missing for so long? Come introduce yourself if you are! |

I guess I could also call this "An Advocate For Deliberate Redundancy". The term "Redundancy" is probably about as anathema to the average business leader as anathema can get. Read more...
I always wish more sellers and marketers would ask this question more sincerely of their buyers. I look around me and I see so many placebos being offered. Worse still, they are being wolfed down with great relish. Caveat Emptor - let the buyer beware! Read more...
