We go the way of all the Earth - Productivity! Everyone loves productivity. For bosses, productivity equals profits. For workers, productivity means better and easier ways of doing the job. Best of all, just automate and leave a couple of highly-skilled people to oversee machines that require very little overseeing, anyway. We invest in IT, "Knowledge Management", "Business Intelligence", "Enterprise Resource Planning", "Customer Relationship Management", and a plethora of similar systems, all in the hope of boosting productivity, to the end that we may see a boost in our bank accounts, for the attainment of what we generally see as a better life. Oh, don't let your hackles rise, bigger bank accounts mean you'd be in a better position to help others too, right? But that's for another issue. There must be a reason why dogs are man's best friend. Maybe it's because of the tendency to bark up the wrong tree. Ladies, we do share some characteristics in common, so just read on, ok? Let me illustrate. I'm a so-so fan of the Body Beautiful, but I am an absolute stark raving fan of the Body Optimal. To attain the Body Beautiful, we have personal trainers, "specific" and "targeted" exercise regimes, diets, spa treatments, supplements, even supplements that "target" certain areas, etc, etc. This helps shape the body to what people would generally term most desirable. Mr Olympia, Miss Universe, whatever. I don't really mind that, if it is an expression of the desire to look one's best. However, I am much more in favour of having a body that is sculpted by hard work, that is inured to physical labour and the elements, that carries me around well and lets me do what I need to without my having to pay too much attention to it. I am starkly and ravingly all for having a body that can go without food for days and still function as a contributing entity to all stakeholders. I am all for a body that stays healthy even during a period like the SARS outbreak, and which does not need to be paranoid about getting infected, but just takes the normal common-sense precautions. I am all for a body that provides first-class support to a brain that can be in subjection to my mind, and being able to discern that things like "Y2K" don't mean a new brand of zippers, nor the end of digital life as we know it, but rather something that will pass after the general hysteria has died down. Productivity for all. Great! In pushing the productivity frontier, are you going for the Body Beautiful, or will you choose to go for the Body Optimal? You know what I mean. Go for it! |
