Greetings!
Do you know that that's one of the main ways you can make execution easy? That's right, you write it down! I have met so many people who have such a huge issue with getting their time organized, or should I say prioritized, getting their ideas written down, starting a blog, and, for so many things, just simply getting STARTED. I've stated before that we should not simply do something for the sake of being seen to be doing something, when we actually have no clue as to what we're doing or what is actually needful. "Don't just do something, STAND THERE for a while!" Heard that one before? Yes, we do need to stand back, assess the situation, determine what courses of action need to be embarked upon and check if we have the required resources to do it. My experience with many people is that jumping in the Nike way is not their main issue. Getting started is.
Are YOU one of those people who are afraid of starting things? What are you afraid of? For some people, fear of not finishing is a big one. People fear the crushing feeling of being ridiculed, real or imagined. And so they don't start at all. Fear of rocking the boat is almost universal. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it". Who said we were supposed to fix it? We're either having a major overhaul or smashing it to pieces and making something new! We fear rocking the boat because we think it's overloaded and there aren't any other boats in sight. Well, toss some stuff overboard. Make do with what works, but keep improving all the time, whenever and wherever you can!
Writing things down helps to crystallize our thoughts, and that is what will galvanize us into productive action. It doesn't matter if you write it down on a notepad or on a butcher sheet, just write it down and display it at least for a while. Have it handy so you can refer back to what you've written in future. I review my own posts from time to time, and sometimes new insights jump out at me from looking through old ones. You should try it yourself!
Getting an accountability partner is one very good way of making sure you get started. None of us likes to be seen as a failure or a defaulter, and an accountability partner helps out with that no end. Of course, get someone whom you can trust to hold your feet to the fire, not someone who will leave you to your own devices at the first hint of resistance from you! One of those six-foot, 200-pound gorillas disguised as drill sergeant types should work rather well. If you can't find any amongst your friends or associates, you might want to get professional help. Finally, make a concerted effort to celebrate small wins, no matter how small. This is where many if you are clueless. Doesn't matter, just start with a small party with food, drink, small talk, and maybe a cake with one candle for a first win, you know what to do! Whatever it is, forget that "It's not in my nature to celebrate THAT! That's just what's expected!" Well, if it was what was expected, how come it wasn't done? Put your reservations aside, and just CELEBRATE! Make yourself and people around you feel good, too. And no negative talk during this occasion. So, there you have it. Write things down, get an accountability partner and celebrate small wins. Ready to start? Execution, or simply accomplishing great things, is done just like that. Get started. At least then you'll have an option of finishing strong! |
