Greetings!
Most of us ought to be familiar with the saying "Experience is the best teacher". We have also probably heard that it is less expensive to learn from the experiences of others. You figure out what the best mix of others' experiences and own experiences ought to be, given categories of experiences, experiences to be desired, and experiences to be avoided. Whatever the case, we ought to be building others' experiences appropriately into our own storehouses of knowledge and wisdom. If you've been listening to the BNI podcasts, and I hope you have, you would have noticed that Episode 259 asks us "Why Make All the Mistakes?" Dr Ivan Misner talks about the time he got stung by a Portuguese Man of War and rushed around asking a few people what he should do about it. When told that he ought to simply apply vinegar and meat tenderizer to the areas that had been stung, he reacted in unbelief, even when he was advised of the same by a few people in succession. When it got to the stage when the medics had to be called in, he was astounded when they simply applied - you guessed it - vinegar and meat tenderizer to the areas which had been stung! Now, of course, we need to ascertain the validity and reliability of others' experiences, and that requires discernment, wisdom and probably a small measure of prior knowledge about the pertinent subject or situation. This is when we read others' experiences and act based on the message we receive. Benefitting from the experiences of others helps us to avoid the possible high prices of getting those same experiences for ourselves. Another way of learning cheaply from others' experiences is to look out for each other's blind spots. In this case, it would be others' current experiences rather than past experiences. In the film "Full Metal Jacket" directed by Stanley Kubrick, there is a scene where someone using a squad radio was hit by sniper fire because he had his back to an opening. If one of his squad mates had observed his compromising position and gotten him into a better position, he might not have been killed in such a manner. When I was involved in Infantry basic combat skills training, I used to bring a loudhailer along and ensconce myself in the "enemy" position. I would usually be able to observe soldiers diligently executing their drills, seeking cover appropriately and ensuring that someone was laying down covering fire before they moved to the next cover. However, they would very often forget that trees, rocks, folds in the ground, that seemed to afford them cover from their perspective, might actually not cover the lower halves of their bodies from enemy fire! The loudhailer came in very handy in describing what I could see to the troops involved, and reminding them to execute their drills as they ought and communicate better with each other. They usually got it after a few more runs. So there you have it. How do we learn cheaply from others' experiences? Firstly, by trusting that they DO know something you don't, even as you exercise your discernment in ascertaining validity and reliability. Secondly, get feedback from their current experiences. They can probably see things you can't, simply because they have a different perspective, a different viewing point, looking at the same things you are! Have a great week! |

FACTS! Essential Oils are more than fragrance/scent, essential oils, when used with education can enhance your well-being.
Our mission is to share the benefits of therapeutic-grade essential oils and oil-enhanced products for vitality and wellness.
Only plants that meet our standard are used, otherwise no amount of preparation can extract Young Living Therapeutic Grade oils. Young Living will continue to perfect growing and harvesting techniques using our network of farms in Idaho, Utah, France, and Ecuador.
Essential Oils can help Business Professionals to achieve positive energy through the day. Peppermint for alertness at work, Cedarwood for mental focus and Abundance to attract a wealth of possibilities at work, and so many other oils to boost your work performance!
Studies have shown that inhaling the essential oil of peppermint can increase mental accuracy by as much as 28 percent.
Abundance™ is created to enhance the frequency of the harmonic magnetic energy field that surrounds us. This higher frequency creates what is called "the law of attraction," which refers to the things we attract to ourselves. Abundance opens us to a wealth of possibilities.
A study conducted in 2001 by Dr. Terry Friedman compared the effects of lavender, vetiver, and cedarwood essential oils in improving focus and learning in ADD and ADHD kids. Vetiver was found to be the most effective in observations and brain wave scans - showing improvements in 100% of subjects. Cedarwood essential oil was 83% effective, and lavender 60%. (Not restricted to kids, ADULTS will get the benefits too!)
