PR Points For Public Relations. EC Newsletter Issue 65: 16 Oct 2012

Greetings!

What is PR? (HD)
What is PR? (HD)

Recently, a potential business ally has been trying to interest me in Public Relations. My previous Public Relations experiences were all measurable numbers. 5.56 mm, 7.62 mm, 9 mm, 40 mm, to 155 mm. Which is to say, nada. To address the nada issue, I started to look up references on the subject. The video clip above is one of the things I came across.

PR Public Relations is not like what the cartoon suggests, putting the blame on someone(s) or something(s). Public Relations is how the general public thinks, perceives, views, and feels about us, our businesses, the value we provide to the community at large and what they perceive the nature of our relationship with them is. Of course, we are businesses that provide great value to all our stakeholders, ja? Otherwise we really have no business being in business. Public Relations really is just what it says - Public Relations, meaning the nature and quality of our relationships with all our stakeholders, which includes the public at large, of course.

I thought up some terms relevant to Public Relations using "PR". They are:
  1. Personal Responsibility.
  2. Profound Repercussions.
  3. Puissant Responses.

1.     Personal Responsibility.

Public Relations is the personal responsibility of everyone in the company. It is not just within the purview of the Boss or the Public Relations Department. Everyone, from the Receptionist to the Delivery Driver, has Personal Responsibility for fostering good public Relations. First of all for themselves and secondly for the company they are working with. Many people separate their personal identities from that of the company's and that is a grave fallacy. If you as an employee deliver outstanding value on behalf of your company, does that augur well for you personally? Word gets around. Impressions formed tend to linger. Make sure that they are good!

2.     Profound Repercussions.

Like it or not, the quality of Public Relations has a great impact on our company's performance, whether you own the company or are working in it. If the quality of PR takes a nosedive, you might even be laid off because of shrinking profits. Of course, if the quality of PR is great, then the profitability of the company goes up, and everyone benefits. It is in your best interests to ensure that not only you, but those around you, are conscious of the fact that you are all ambassadors of your company, whatever you may be doing.

3.     Puissant Responses.

No matter how well we've integrated into the company and no matter how much we encourage Murphy to go on leave, exciting things will still happen. Some seemingly small mix-up will turn out to be a huge boo-boo if it happens to roll on unchecked. In such nasty situations, we all need to be wise and discreet when handling customer complaints and angry Netizens. This is easier said than done, particularly if the fault happens to be ours, and the thing is, the fault is ours most of the time, if you bother to really analyze what happened. Asking for forgiveness, not just "apologizing" and making restitution would go a long way in restoring great PR for you and your company.

Well, if your interest in PR has been sparked, do google or YouTube and look at some more characteristics of PR on your own. Perhaps you'd like to make up more PR-related terms using "PR". Let me know what you come up with, I'd really like to hear from you!

Being The Nerve Centre.

Apollo 13 Mission Control A program I recently helped deliver with my Allies in Fish Camp brought back memories of life in a setup akin to an Op Centre. If there is an antithesis to the seemingly ubiquitous "silo" mentality in organizations, the Op Centre must surely be it! I'm talking about Op Centres that actually work, of course. Read more...
