 Greetings!   

 

Greetings to YOU and a Warm Welcome to our strong community of high-achieving women who intend to thrive amidst the challenges of work and life while showing grace under pressure.

 

I'm amazed that just 2 weeks ago we were skiing for Spring break, and now the grass is green, trees are budding, and many flowers are already in bloom.  

  

Life is full of sudden changes, not only in weather temperature, but in ups and downs of emotional climates as well.  One minute you can feel great like everything is soaring.  The next minute you get slammed with bad news, a loved one falls ill, or tragedy strikes like last week's Boston bombing.

 

For better or worse, that's just the way it is.

  

But what's NOT just the way it is, is whether you will Retreat in fear, Respond with graceful resolve, or React in panic to these constant fluctuations.  

  

As the C.E.O. of Y.O.U. you're empowered to control your attitudes and interpretations.  Our ability to Respond quickly as part of the solution in times of crisis (as opposed to part of the problem) requires that we have a reservoir of resilience to draw from on a moment's notice.   

  

I have learned the hard way through burn out that in order to serve I need a reserve.  That's what has led me to promote a Restorative Lifestyle, which creates a clear mind, a healthy body, and a loving spirit through small steps and daily deposits of intention, playfulness, and rest.

  

As I watched the Boston trauma unfold in real time on the news, I sat in awe of those who immediately ran towards the explosions rather than away from them to help the injured.  They had the mental focus, strength, and compassion to look past the haters and became helpers, putting their own well-being at risk because they knew who they were and what they stood for.

 

We can be used as instruments of peace and healing wherever we are.  With our family, friends,and co-workers, as well as for strangers in need.  Living a more engaged, self-aware, and energetic life will give us the courage to jump into action with the helpers when our time comes.

 

Serving others in the highest way does not happen by default, nor does it exclude your self-care.  It happens by design, and includes giving your mental, emotional, and spiritual life the attention it deserves.

When Tragedy Strikes...Look for the Helpers

 

In the Wake of last week's Boston bombings, those of us who are parents, grandparents, caregivers, and teachers of small children have found this quote by Mr. Rodgers particularly comforting as we attempt to explain such horror and tragedy to our beloved little ones.   

 

For moms and dads looking for more guidance from experts, the Fred Rogers Company website includes a list of useful tips, including:

  • Do your best to keep the television off, or at least limit how much your child sees of any news event.
  • Try to keep yourself calm. Your presence can help your child feel more secure
  • Give your child extra comfort and physical affection, like hugs or snuggling up together with a favorite book. Physical comfort goes a long way towards providing inner security. That closeness can nourish you, too.
