"The human race has only one really effective weapon,

and that's laughter. The moment it arises, all our hardnesses yield, all our irritations and resentments slip away,

and a sunny spirit takes their place." ~Mark Twain

Greetings to YOU and a Warm Summer Welcome to our growing community of high-achieving women who want to create balanced success and burn brightly without burning out.

YES... it's officially SUMMER at 7:09 PM EST tonight!

Remember how you felt as a kid on the last day of school and the excitement of being "out for the summer"?  This meant no studying, less responsibilities, more vacations, more fun with friends and relaxed time to do a whole lot of nothing.  Inevitably, by the time fall rolled around, we were rested and ready for a new year.

For many busy working women, especially small business owners, summer doesn't automatically have this precious down-time built in anymore.  In fact, summertime often has us busier than ever keeping the bases covered at work and at home, and active kids happily occupied.

Please Take a second right now and grab your calendar...when is your next personal vacation?  Are blocks for self-care scheduled into your calendar each week, like other important appointments?

As go-getting high-achievers, having these snippets of time allotted for rest & rejuvenation are one of the main ways we can prevent burn out.  The ideal would be to have a "free day" on a regular basis to unplug from work, technology, and responsibilities, to simply do whatever would bring a smile to your face and put Joy in your heart;  but because this isn't always possible,

taking shorter but more frequent "mini-vacations " is ideal.

Remember self-care is not a selfish luxury, it's essential to our well-being.  Taking care of everyone in the highest way doesn't exclude us, it includes us.  That's why yesterday I treated myself to a hot stone massage followed by a pampering facial...this 3 hours of total bliss switched off my stress and allowed my relaxation response to take over for awhile.  Trust me, I returned a happier, more patient and attentive mom , and more focused to finish out my work day.

Don't let the summer slip by without having a chance to savor some self-care moments!  If you can't find any appointments with YOU in your calendar, it's time to make some, OK?

Is it a deal?

Perhaps we'll cross paths soon at Bloomfest June 24th, (see event calendar below) or July at SOAR or one of the Synergy Success Circles...

Until then, I wish you well!

Time to Disconnect

I'm in a busy phase of my life right now, both professionally and personally. The result is I'm feeling unbalanced. Fortunately, I attended the Virginia Press Women spring conference this past weekend and attended a workshop by Christina Kunkle, a resilience coach - just what I needed.

Almost immediately, she talked about our need to disconnect. "There is too much emphasis on technology," she said and went on to emphasize the need for a morning routine or practice.

Ironically, I'd had a great routine for years - until I started using my smartphone as an alarm clock. With the smart phone, before I went to sleep I would check for last minute messages or play a quick game of Sudoku. First thing in the morning, after turning off the alarm, I would check my messages.

Chrstina's words hit home. And, I'm not alone. Ben Silbermann, cofounder of Pinterest says in the latest issue of Better Homes and Gardens that he went low-tech and bought an alarm clock to break the habit of checking email righter before bed and first thing in the morning.

In the few days since the workshop, I continue to use my smartphone as an alarm clock but now I don't look at the emails. I have returned to my morning ritual of journaling and making a list for me, which is another thing Christina emphasizes. "You need to be the CEO of Y.O.U.!"

With my list I note if it's a workout day (seeing it in write helps get me to the gym at day's end), jot down evening commitments and identify one or two chores that might need to get done.

"We should start our day with ourselves at the top of the day," Christina said.

By disconnecting, I actually feel more connected, or at least - grounded.
