Synergy Success E-Zine, April, 2012
"Anybody can become angry - that is easy,
but to be angry with the right person and to the right degree
and at the right time and for the right purpose, and in the right way -
that is not within everybody's power and is not easy." ~ Aristotle |
Greetings!
Greetings to YOU and a Warm Easter Welcome to our strong community of high-achieving women who intend to thrive amidst the challenges of work and life while showing grace under pressure.
Spring Break is in full swing with Easter weekend right around the corner. Our family is packing up to enjoy a long weekend at our cabin in West VA, and no doubt many of you are preparing for your own get-away.
In honor of April being "Distracted Driving Awareness month", this issue offers pro-active tips to help us arrive at our destination safely. We all know how crazy it can get just trying to get out of the office for a few days, much less gather kids, groceries, pets, games, clothes, and recreation gear! Chances are, if you're like the rest of us, you can recall a time (or two) when you were so frazzled, frustrated, or behind schedule by the time your car finally pulled out of the driveway that you didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
Our high-speed, multi-tasking ways can easily keep us from being fully present to ourselves and each other, setting the stage for confusion and chaos. Instead, we can transition from the fast lane into a relaxed pace using a few mindfulness tips: Choose a positive attitude no matter what happens around you, plan ahead where possible, divide to-do's among family members, practice deep breathing, keep your sense of humor, and stay focused on what's most important.
Remember, "the Journey is the Reward", so let's Buckle-up, put our phone's down, and do our best to Escape distraction...(whether it's the temptation to multi-task, engage angry drivers in road rage, or snap at impatient travelers asking "how much longer" for the 100th time!)
May you Have a Blessed and Safe Easter!

Did You Know that April is
Distracted Driving Awareness Month?
Click for Powerful YouTube clip "The Last Word"!
A gut-wrenching reminder that it's essential to keep a Sharp Mental Focus, especially behind the wheel!
Behavior Increased Risk:
- Texting (illegal in Virginia) 23 times
- Reaching for a moving object 9 times
- Driving drowsy 4 times
- Looking at an external object 3.7 times
- Reading 3.4 times
- Applying makeup 3 times
Top 10 Tips to Minimize Your Distracted Driving
- CHANGE YOUR WAYS and recognize the activities that distract you; such as eating, conversing on the phone, or changing a CD.
- MAKE A PLAN. Get directions, study your route, check weather and road conditions. Make sure children are properly buckled up and occupied.
- MANAGE YOUR TIME so that you do not have to multi-task or drive aggressively on the road.
- DON'T LET YOUR DRIVE TIME BECOME YOUR DOWN TIME.
- SCAN the roadway to make sure that you are aware of others on the road at all times. Be prepared for the unpredictability of others.
- CONCENTRATE on your driving. Make sure that you are not upset or tired when getting on the road.
- PULL OVER to a safe place if you need to do something that will take your eyes and/or mind off of the road.
- REDUCE THE USE! Use GPS and other technology sensibly. Program devices before you hit the gas.
- TAKE A REFRESHER CLASS! A driver improvement class can raise your awareness and help you assess your driving behaviors.
- BUCKLE UP, EVERY TRIP, EVERY TIME. Making sure that everyone is properly buckled up is the best defense against distracted drivers.
DRIVE SMART, VIRGINIA!
