And if you run full-speed ahead without stopping for water,

you lose momentum to finish the race." ~Oprah Winfrey

Greetings to YOU and a Warm Fall Welcome to our growing community of busy women who want to gracefully THRIVE amidst the challenges of work and life.

As a Resilience Coach, every day I help women release the misguided notion that self-care is a luxury. Instead, I wholeheartedly embrace the philosophy that it is essential, encouraging them to work hard, play hard, and rest well.

Many of us feel it's selfish to spend the time and money to treat ouselves when there are still things we need to do, people we must see, and places we have to go. (Ever heard a "Type-A" person say "I'll rest when I'm dead?" I have!) We stay so busy running and pushing to accomplish our daily tasks that we forget to re-fuel, driving ourselves to depletion.

Because I firmly believe that enjoying a restorative lifestyle is the #1 way to stay focused, positive, and excited about work and life, I intentionally build "rest and renew" blocks into my monthly schedule.  People often comment on how much I get accomplished, yet are shocked to find me browsing at Barnes and Noble in the middle of a work day, hiking with a picnic lunch to the labyrinth, or cat-napping on a sunny bench at the arboretum.  Believe it or not, these short bursts of downtime keep me tapped into a high level of inspiration and creativity, helping me deliver my best self to the world.

This month I had the pleasure of re-connecting with a childhood passion... walk-trotting beautiful horses in the crisp fall air down wooded trails, across streams, and through some pretty breath-taking scenery at Jordan Hollow Stables in Stanley, VA with Laurie DiSanto, a fun-loving friend who shares a love of horses and outdoor adventure!

If you regularly carve out time for relaxation and rejuvenation, Woo Hoo! If not, I challenge you start right NOW. Don't just read this and think "that's a great idea but it won't work for me." Plan something special into your calendar and stick to it. It should be a world away from work, free from responsibilities, worries, concerns, and even goals.

What will it be for you? Perhaps its simply reading a book, getting a massage or manicure, decorating a room, or going to the movies with a close friend.  Whatever you choose, remember you deserve a few sacred moments to enjoy as you wish!

 "I would highly recommend SOAR!

It has given me the opportunity to take a very close look at myself and how I need to move forward in a very positive direction. Areas that I just don't take the time to contemplate, talents and gifts that would have continued to have remained "untapped" rise to the surface.

I have really enjoyed getting to know other women who are truly invested in bettering themselves in an attempt to enrich all areas of their lives, professionally; socially; within their own families and spiritually."

Quotes to THRIVE by!

"Women need real moments of solitude and self-reflection to balance out how much of ourselves we give away."

~Barbara de Angelis

"Women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we're scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don't have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own 'to-do' list."

~Michelle Obama

"I learned again that the mind-body-spirit connection has to be in balance."

~Wynonna Judd

"In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth."

~Patti Smith

"For fast-acting relief, try slowing down."

~Lily Tomlin

"Worrying is all about the illusion of control. When you worry, you are expending energy, and it feels like you are doing something... When you stop worrying, you free up energy that can be used more productively."

~Tammy Cravit

"Striving for excellence motivates you; striving for perfection is demoralizing."

~Harriet Braiker

"Looking back at the times where I allowed my work to create stress and frustration in my life, I now realize what I thought was important really was not. I am not saying you should not take your work seriously; what I am saying is that we need to realize that life is all about balance."

~Catherine Pulsifer

"Never work just for money or for power. They won't save your soul or help you sleep at night."

~Marian Wright Edelman
