Alumni Take Top Government Posts in Foreign Nations
Three School of Business alumni have taken key government leadership posts in Latin America and the Caribbean in recent weeks. On Jan. 27, Porfirio "Pepe" Lobo, who earned his bachelor of business administration degree from the School in 1970, was sworn in as the new president of Honduras. More

Mercedes AraozAn alumna who graduated from the School with a master in economics in 1991 is Peru's first female minister of finance. Mercedes Araoz  was sworn in to her post in late December. More

And in the Bahamas, Ellison Greenslade, who earned his MBA from the School in 1998 is the new commissioner of police. He was sworn in earlier this month. More

Greenslade's appointment follows the naming of Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, who earned his MBA from the School in 1980, as the minister of tourism and aviation for the Bahamas. Vanderpool-Wallace took that post in 2008. More

Financial TimesSchool's MBA Program Ranked Among World's Best by Financial Times
The influential Financial Times this month ranked the School's full-time MBA program as the No. 52 MBA program in the U.S. The annual rankings also place the School No. 35 in the U.S. and No. 40 worldwide for research, a measure of the School's faculty research productivity.

Haiti Relief'Canes Helping Haiti
As relief efforts continue in Haiti following the devastating earthquake there, the University of Miami has joined the growing worldwide community that is reaching out to the crisis-hit country with donations, supplies, and volunteers.

FIRST Step Program Participants FIRST Step Program Delivers Solutions to Community Organizations
More than a dozen Miami-area community organizations benefited in 2009 from the School of Business Administration's groundbreaking course called FIRST Step. Throughout the semester freshman business students work in teams on various projects designed to help service-oriented organizations better meet the needs of their constituents through activities such as branding, social entrepreneurship, and business plan development.

Jackie Birnbaum and mentor Sharon Unger Women's Chamber of Commerce of Miami Dade County Honors Business Student as Future Leader
Jackie Birnbaum, a sophomore majoring in marketing and a participant in the School's Gateway to Excellence through Mentorship, or GEM program, won the Women's Chamber of Commerce of Miami Dade County Thelma Gibson Student Achiever Award of Excellence. Each year the award, established to honor the Chamber's founder, Thelma Gibson, recognizes an individual and a corporation that has excelled in promoting leadership, excellence and business development among corporate and professional women. The student achiever award was added this year to recognize future women leaders and three UM School of Business students were nominated. Nominees, Natalia Hoyos, a senior majoring in accounting and minoring in finance, and Melissa Butler, a sophomore, are also GEM participants. The award was presented on January 21.

Gavel UM Team Shines in Mock Trial Competition at UCLA
A University of Miami mock trial team, including a student from the School of Business, advanced to the first place match at a competition this month at the University of Southern California. The UM team won in the first three rounds against UCLA, UC-Irvine and Fresno State. The UM team faced off against the University of California, Berkeley in the first place match, but lost in a very close round decided by only a few points. The UCLA Invitational started with 40 teams across the U.S. Two students on the UM team, Nicole Chessin, a business major, and Zach Gonzalez in Arts and Sciences, were recognized as outstanding individuals in the competition.

Business Students Win Target Case Study Competition
Four senior business students shared a $4,000 scholarship prize ($1,000 per student), for their project, "Recycling Your Plastic Through Target," in a case study competition. Lindsay English, Elan Foxman, Kiara Frey, and Timo Stern followed guidelines provided by Target and, working in teams, prepared a written and oral presentation of the project they devised.  The award was presented by Victor Rota, a Target representative, on December 2.

Miguel "Mike" Fernandez, the successful health care entrepreneur and chairman of MBF Healthcare Partners, speaks about his career and overcoming bankruptcy, the importance of giving back and higher education. Tsiros Faculty Members Honored
Michael Tsiros, department chair and associate professor of  marketing received the 2010 Davidson Award for the Best Article in the Journal of Retailing 2008 (Volume 84) for an article co-authored with Anne L. Roggeveen and Dhruv Grewal entitled, "The Effect of Compensation on Repurchase Intentions in Service Recovery."


 
SantosManuel Santos, professor and holder of the James L. Knight Chair, and chair of the economics department, has been elected as a fellow of the Econometric Society.  With a worldwide membership, the Econometric Society is the most prestigious society in its field. Over the past decade, only about 15 individuals per year worldwide have been elected as fellows. Econometric Society fellows must have published original contributions to economic theory or to statistical, mathematical, or accounting analyses that pertain to problems in economic theory. The society publishes the journal Econometrica, the field's premier journal.

Eric KrissEntrepreneurship Practicum with Entrepreneur-in-Residence Eric Kriss
During the Spring 2010 semester, Entrepreneur in Residence Eric Kriss will offer a weekly practicum on different aspects of starting a new venture. In these sessions, Eric will offer insights from his extensive entrepreneurial career on basic topics that every entrepreneur has to address. The practicum is an excellent supplement to the SBA entrepreneurship curriculum, as well as an invaluable resource for anyone considering a startup venture. Florida Trend - Feb. 1, 2010 - Eric Kriss, an entrepreneur-in-residence at the School, was among two "Trendsetters" profiled in the monthly magazine. The article outlined Kriss's work with entrepreneurship students at the School. Article

The Wall Street Journal - Jan. 25, 2010 - The newspaper's Business Insight special report included an article authored by Robert Plant, an associate professor of management, who detailed a model that aims to help companies decide which green initiatives to pursue and which to avoid by placing them in one of four categories. South Florida Business Journal - Jan. 22, 2010 - An article about an attempt by Florida banking regulators to shut down the Miami international banking operations of a Venezuelan bank included insight from Andrea Heuson, a professor of finance. Article

The New York Times - Jan. 21, 2010 - The newspaper's Room for Debate blog published commentary about a Supreme Court decision striking down a ban on corporate campaign spending from Christopher Cotton, an assistant professor of economics. Dow Jones News Service - Jan. 7, 2010 - Michael Tsiros, chairman and associate professor of marketing, offered insight about online versus brick-and-mortar holiday retail sales, saying that retailers heavily promoted their Web sites to show their presence in a move that "may actually have cost them more than the sales they received." The article was published by CNNMoney.com, FOX Business News online, and NASDAQ online, among other media.

The New York Times - December 28, 2009 - Terri Scandura, professor of management and the academic director of the Leadership Institute, offered suggestions for finding a good career mentor. "Tell someone that you really admire his ability to develop strategic plans, and most will be so flattered they will say yes,'' Scandura said.

FOX Business Network - December 24, 2009 - In a live interview, Steven Ullmann, director of the School's health sector management and policy programs, provided insight on the health care reform bill passed by the U.S. Senate earlier in the day.

Nightly Business Report (PBS) - December 22, 2009 - Dean Barbara Kahn, appearing as a guest commentator on the national business program, explained how consumer confidence and spending can be influenced by the way in which economic and other information is "framed" in the marketplace. Transcript
