School to Host Major Conference on
Global Business
The School of Business will host the University
of Miami's first Global Business Forum January 15 - 16, 2009. The event will
bring together some of the most influential leaders in international business
for two days of forward-thinking discussion about "Harnessing the Power of the
Connected World," the theme of the conference. The scheduled keynote speakers
include Muhtar Kent, president
and COO of The Coca-Cola Company; Frances
Aldrich Sevilla-Sacasa, president of U.S. Trust Corporation, Bank of America
Private Wealth Management; Arun Sarin,
CEO of Vodafone Group; Donna E.
Shalala, president, University of Miami and former U.S. Secretary of
Health and Human Services; Jim Skinner,
vice chairman and CEO of McDonald's Corporation; Frederick W. Smith, chairman, president and CEO of FedEx
Corporation; and Jack Welch,

Unveils New Web Site
The UM School of Business launched a redesigned Web site
this spring. The site features not only an updated look, but many new sections
to showcase the School's innovative programs, the strengths of its faculty and
research, and the activities of students. The home page is designed to be informational
and engaging for visitors, featuring photos, news articles and event notices
that will be updated frequently in order to illustrate the momentum at the

School of Business Graduates Nearly 1,000
Students The UM School of Business graduated almost 400 seniors and nearly 100 MBA and
other master program students during spring commencement ceremonies. The
student speaker address was given by the business school's own graduate

MBA Alum Helps Two Men Move From Homeless Shelter to Executive Suite Executive presentations in the
School's Storer Auditorium aren't known for having homeless people in the
audience. Or even the formerly homeless, which was the case on June 12, 2008,
when Frank Kelly (MBA '03), a Johnson & Johnson executive who has been

Business Certificate Program Begins in August The next class in the School's new General Business Certificate Program starts August 29. The program provides an opportunity for working professionals and graduate students in other University programs to enhance their business skills. It is also an opportunity for business school alumni to return to the School for additional coursework. Applicants must have an undergraduate degree to enroll in the program. Undergraduates
Change Lives in Jamaica Dozens of women running their own businesses in Jamaica are
better prepared to succeed in their ventures thanks to six undergraduate
students from the School of Business. The students spent 13 days in and around
Kingston and Ocho Rios this spring as part of a team working on a new project
to teach entrepreneurship skills to the 40 Jamaican women. The project
involved providing training and technical assistance to the women to enhance
their capacity to become more competitive and self-reliant in the small Caribbean

CEO Offers Winning Program to Business Students
CEO of TigerDirect and adjunct business law professor, Gilbert Fiorentino is sponsoring a summer internship program for 10 School of Business students. The program gives students the opportunity to not only learn on the job, but through weekly presentations by company executives and rotations through different departments. FULL ARTICLE

BusinessWeek - June 23, 2008 - Research conducted by Ya-Wen Yang, assistant professor of accounting, which found that publicly traded companies reap big financial returns from Washington lobbying, is featured in an article. An article about the same research was also published June 7 in the National Journal.
WorldCity Business - June 2008 - The magazine's cover story details the School's vision, led by Dean Barbara Kahn, to build a global brand around the School's healthcare business programs. The article notes the new joint MD-MBA degree program launching this fall and includes quotes from Kahn as well as Steven Ullmann, director of the School's Health Sector Management and Policy Programs.
