The School of Business joined countries around the
world in promoting Global Entrepreneurship Week, a range of activities designed
to inform, mentor and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs. During the
week of November 17, the School hosted a number of programs as part of its

Anita Cava is
Faculty Senate's 2009 Outstanding Teacher Award Recipient
The University of Miami Faculty Senate has selected Anita
Cava, associate professor of business law, as the recipient of its 2009
Outstanding Teaching Award. The Faculty Senate voted unanimously Nov. 19 to
present the award to Cava who is also co-director of UM Ethics Programs. More |
UM Ethics Debate Team Going to the National Intercollegiate
Ethics Bowl in March On Saturday, Nov. 15, the University of Miami competed in
the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl held at the University of North Carolina
at Chapel Hill. Seventeen teams
met to engage in robust discussion of ethical
issues.
The UM team placed third and is invited to compete in the

Rising Cost of Healthcare Addressed in UM Experience Program Steven Ullmann, professor of management and economics and director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy, addressed the rising costs of healthcare in a seminar, entitled "How Sick is Our Health System," as part of the University of Miami's Audrey R. Hyperion Council Hosts Seminar on Caribbean Business
The School's Hyperion Council hosted the Hon. Karl Samuda, Jamaica's minister of industry,
commerce and investment for its first business expo and seminar Oct. 28. The events capstoned the
council's year-long initiative to raise awareness and resources for its
entrepreneurship program among women in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. The

Prominent Business Ethics Expert Engages School's Freshmen in FIRST Step Lecture Freshmen in the School's new FIRST Step course had the opportunity to hear from Bowen H. "Buzz" McCoy, a long-time leader, thinker and author in business ethics. McCoy spoke to
students about the Parable of the Sadhu, an article he published in the
Harvard Business Review analyzing the differences between corporate and individual ethics. More

Program Want to Make a Difference Students enrolled in the School's new joint MD/MBA program,
launched this fall, may have differing backgrounds but one thing they do share
is a desire to use the program's business training to make contributions that
extend beyond conventional patient care. The program, which is conducted in
partnership with the UM Miller School of Medicine, adds a year of business
education following the third year of the traditional four-year MD track. More |
Strictly Business Welcomes Senior Vice President of UBS
The Strictly Business Association, an undergraduate student organization, recently welcomed Jared Kaplan, MBA '01 and senior vice president of investments for UBS Financial Services.
Kaplan spoke to dozens of undergraduate students, alumni and faculty about the current
credit crisis as well as the importance staying involved with the School of
Business as alumni. Students also had the opportunity to network with several
representatives from UBS after the event.
"It was a very interesting overview of the reasons that
led to the current crisis we are experiencing. He also gave thorough
explanations of the duties and responsibilities that the wealth management team
experiences," said sophomore Nikolay Petrov Nedyalkov.

MBAs Compete in Project Management Competition Municipal recycling was the theme
when three teams of MBA students competed for top honors and prize money
November 18 in a series of project management presentations held at the School of Business Administration. The competition asks participants, all UM MBA students, to develop
a project management plan for a recycling initiative in the fictional South
Florida community of Coral Green. More

Barcelona, Madrid and London. Dean Barbara Kahn and members of the
School and University development teams hosted an alumni reception in
Madrid Nov. 4 and in London Nov. 6, drawing some 100 School of Business

Alumnus Joins Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust as Restoration Efforts Begin on the Miami Landmark At a Nov. 12 meeting, alumnus and volunteer in the School of Business Mentor Program Hunting Deutsch (MBA '82), executive vice president of wealth management, BankUnited, FSB, was named to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust. Professional Baseball Player Succeeds On and Off the Field Marcus Antwan Nettles, BBA'08, member of the 1999 and 2001 Hurricanes National
Championship baseball team, left during his junior year to play professionally with
the San Diego Padres. In the fall of 2006, he returned to UM, and in December 2007 he graduated with a degree in Business and is now running his own athletic consulting business, Hidden Gem Discoveries LTD.
