The School of Business joined countries around the world in promoting Global Entrepreneurship Week, a range of activities designed to inform, mentor and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs. Dr. Anita CavaAnita Cava is Faculty Senate's 2009 Outstanding Teacher Award Recipient
The University of Miami Faculty Senate has selected Anita Cava, associate professor of business law, as the recipient of its 2009 Outstanding Teaching Award. The Faculty Senate voted unanimously Nov. 19 to present the award to Cava who is also co-director of UM Ethics Programs. More
UM Ethics Debate Team Going to the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl in Ethics Bowl TeamMarch
On Saturday, Nov. 15, the University of Miami competed in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Ethics Bowl held at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.  Seventeen teams met to engage in robust discussion of ethical issues. The UM team placed third and is invited to compete in the National Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl. More

Undergraduate Hyperion Council Hosts Seminar on Caribbean BusinessMinister of Industry Hon. Karl Samuda
The School's Hyperion Council hosted the Hon. Karl Samuda, Jamaica's minister of industry, commerce and investment for its first business expo and seminar Oct. 28. The events capstoned the council's year-long initiative to raise awareness and resources for its entrepreneurship program among women in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean. The seminar was entitled "Increasing Global Market Access: Doing Business in the Caribbean." More
Prominent Business Ethics Expert Engages School's Freshmen in FIRST Step Lecture
Freshmen in the School's new FIRST Step course had the opportunity to hear from Bowen H. "Buzz" McCoy, a long-time leader, thinker and author in business ethics. McCoy spoke to students about the Parable of the Sadhu, an article he published in the Harvard Business Review analyzing the differences between corporate and individual ethics. More
Peer Counselors Undergraduate Students and Alumni Reunite to Celebrate 18 Years of Successful Counseling Program
Adding a new tradition to the UM Alumni Weekend festivities, the School of Business celebrated 18 years of peer counseling with a reunion for all former and current participants of the undergraduate program. More

 
MD/MBA students Students in New MD/MBA Program Want to Make a Difference
Students enrolled in the School's new joint MD/MBA program, launched this fall, may have differing backgrounds but one thing they do share is a desire to use the program's business training to make contributions that extend beyond conventional patient care. The program, which is conducted in partnership with the UM Miller School of Medicine, adds a year of business education following the third year of the traditional four-year MD track. More
Strictly BusinessStrictly Business Welcomes Senior Vice President of UBS
The Strictly Business Association, an undergraduate student organization, recently welcomed Jared Kaplan, MBA '01 and senior vice president of investments for UBS Financial Services.  Kaplan spoke to dozens of undergraduate students, alumni and faculty about the current credit crisis as well as the importance staying involved with the School of Business as alumni. Students also had the opportunity to network with several representatives from UBS after the event.

"It was a very interesting overview of the reasons that led to the current crisis we are experiencing. He also gave thorough explanations of the duties and responsibilities that the wealth management team experiences," said sophomore Nikolay Petrov Nedyalkov.

Marcelo FumasoniMSPM Participant Wins Award for Excellence in Executive Development
Marcelo Fumasoni, a student in the Maestria en Ciencias de Gerencia Professional (MSPM) program at the School of Business received the Iluminis Award from Universidad de Ciencias Empresariales y Sociales - Argentina - in the category "Excellence in Executive Development." Fumasoni is the head of  Human Resources Latin America for Novartis Pharmaceuticals Corp. More

PMI WinnersMBAs Compete in Project Management Competition
Municipal recycling was the theme when three teams of MBA students competed for top honors and prize money November 18 in a series of project management presentations held at the School of Business Administration.  The competition asks participants, all UM MBA students, to develop a project management plan for a recycling initiative in the fictional South Florida community of Coral Green. More

How much ice was used in the city of Miami last year? Huh? Again: How much ice was used in the city of Miami last year? That was the question that Ellen McPhillip, assistant dean for undergraduate business programs, used to kick off a presentation to prospective business students and their families in the University of Miami School of Business Administration's Storer Auditorium on November 9. School's Global Outreach Efforts Bring Alumni Together in EuropeDean Kahn with Allen and Patricia Herbert in London
The School's global outreach effort continued this month with stops in Barcelona, Madrid and London. Dean Barbara Kahn and members of the School and University development teams hosted an alumni reception in Madrid Nov. 4 and in London Nov. 6, drawing some 100 School of Business and other UM alumni living in and around those European cities.

Hunt DeutschAlumnus Joins Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust as Restoration Efforts Begin on the Miami Landmark
At a Nov. 12 meeting, alumnus and volunteer in the School of Business Mentor Program Hunting Deutsch (MBA '82), executive vice president of wealth management, BankUnited, FSB, was named to the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens Trust. His appointment begins along with plans for a much-needed $50 million restoration.  More on Vizcaya restoration efforts
 
Professional Baseball Player Succeeds On and Off the Field
Marcus Antwan Nettles, BBA'08, member of the 1999 and 2001 Hurricanes National Championship baseball team, left during his junior year to play professionally with the San Diego Padres.  In the fall of 2006, he returned to UM, and in December 2007 he graduated with a degree in Business and is now running his own athletic consulting business, Hidden Gem Discoveries LTD.
