Freshmen Take "FIRST Step" Into Social Entrepreneurship Three hundred sixty freshmen ushered in a new era in business education at the University of Miami School of Business Administration, this fall semester, as they began participating in the newly created MGT 100 course called FIRST Step. The School's new course, an acronym for Freshman Integrity, Responsibility and Success through Teamwork was the brainchild of Vice Dean Linda Neider as a way to expose students to business ethical principles, teamwork and the challenges that organizations face in the twenty-first century. Through the efforts of Assistant Dean and course facilitator, Ellen McPhillip, student teams met with local nonprofit organizations to structure their participation in one of 33 projects. Each project offers an opportunity for service-oriented organizations to better meet the needs of their constituents through activities such as branding, social entrepreneurship, and improved business plans. Summer Assignment: Make a Difference The University of Miami School of Business Administration's MBA Consultant to Non-Profit Business Summer Project had two eager participants this summer for the program's second year. Each student was matched with a Miami-area nonprofit organization for a 10-week internship, becoming a professional business consultant using knowledge gained in the classroom to enrich the community. Alexis Alvarez worked with Family Counseling Services of Greater Miami, Inc., researching grants and analyzing costs of various programs. Her main focus was a program dealing with adult survivors of domestic abuse, and she examined the funding necessary to support its components. Michael Nakash consulted for the Coconut Grove Collaborative - an organization established to develop affordable housing in areas recognized by the government as being the home to many low-income or unemployed individuals. He helped CGC petition a development company designing a $300 million complex to rethink its original plan. More

Two Business Students Shine in Honors Summer Research Program This summer, two School of Business students were chosen to participate in the provost's annual Honors Summer Research Program. Each student was required to work six to eight weeks during the summer and received a $1,500 stipend upon completion of the project. "The main purpose of the program is for the students to hone their research skills and learn about research under the guidance of a faculty mentor. The outcome is that the students will learn how to conduct their own research in the future," said Director of Undergraduate Research and Student Support Services Elisah Lewis. "The Office of the Provost awards 20 grants each summer. This was the first year any were awarded to School of Business students, and we received two. This is very exciting and demonstrates one way that the School's ongoing commitment to research excellence is being recognized." More
