Accounting Department Study Finds Most Analysts Ignore Key Factor When Estimating Earnings
Most
financial analysts seem to ignore a key factor when they estimate earnings
according to a new study by the School's accounting department chair, Andrew
Leone, and assistant professors Sundaresh Ramnath and Ya-Wen Yang. Their
research, cited recently in The Wall Street Journal, reveals that most
analysts they studied ignored an extra week of earnings that many firms report
every five or six years.

Awards Presented to Masters Degree Grads and
Faculty During Commencement Celebration
Newly-minted MBAs, other graduates, family and friends
joined School of Business faculty and administrators for an evening awards
reception outside the School following spring commencement. Awards were
presented to outstanding faculty and the top graduates in the various programs.

Outstanding Seniors and Faculty Honored in Awards Ceremony Ahead of Commencement
Seniors
graduating from the School of Business honored the School's best faculty and
the faculty honored the School's best seniors at the 2009 Undergraduate
Business Programs Awards Ceremony May 13. The event was held two days before spring commencement to celebrate the
accomplishments of students as they prepared for life after college.

School Celebrates Mentors
The School of Business
honored alumni and other leaders in the South Florida business community who give
their time to students at its annual Mentor Appreciation Dinner April 28. The
mentors provide professional and academic guidance to undergraduate and MBA
students throughout the year.

School of Business students helped organize the Sixth Annual Cuba Conference, entitled GenerAcción RDE: Generation in Action, which was held April 2 to 5 at the University of
Miami.

Donors Honored at Scholarship Luncheon
More than 50 scholarship donors and
recipients attended the 29th Annual School of Business Scholarship
Donor Recognition Program & Luncheon on March 27. Many of the donors
present had the opportunity to meet and dine with the students who are the
beneficiaries of their generosity.

Alumnus Named to National Quality Improvement Post
School of Business
alumnus Roberto Saco was recently elected to the Office of the President of the
American Society for Quality.

Alumnus Inducted Into College Football Hall of Fame
Former
UM quarterback Gino Torretta (BBA '91) has been selected as a 2009 inductee into
the College Football Hall of Fame. Now the founder and CEO of Touchdown Radio
productions and vice president for institutional sales with Gabelli Asset Management,
Torretta was
a Heisman Trophy winner and a member of UM's 1989 and 1991 National Champion
Teams.

CEO Returns to Alma Mater as Executive-in-Residence
Matthew Rubel (MBA '80), chairman, CEO and president of
Collective Brands returned to the School of Business in April to speak to
undergraduate marketing students as part of the School's Executive-in-Residence
Program. Collective Brands is the operating company for Payless

Services Center Benefactor Returns to Campus

The Washington Post - May 18, 2009 - The newspaper's "On Leadership" Web section featured research by Andrew Leone,
chair and professor of accounting, which found that CEOs who are also
the founders of their companies are much less likely to lose their jobs
when their firms are cited for accounting irregularities compared to
CEOs who are not founders. In those cases the CFO is more likely to get

found that exposure to small promotional items from pharmaceutical
companies to build awareness of a given product, such as clipboards and
notepads, appears to influence medical students' unconscious or
