School Unveils Multimedia Website on the Business of Health Care 

GBF 2011

Insight from some of the nation's most prominent business and government leaders in the health sector is now available on a new multimedia section of the School of Business website. The section contains videos, session papers and other content produced following the University of Miami's 2011 Global Business Forum, "The Business of Health Care: Defining the Future," which was organized by the School.

School Expands Ties with Caribbean and Latin American Business Communities

Puerto Rico

The School of Business continues to strengthen its ties with the business communities of the Caribbean and wider Latin American region. School representatives traveled this month to Puerto Rico and Panama to meet with top business executives representing firms in the region.

Undergraduates Provide Business Training to Small Business Owners in the Caribbean

Jamaica Project
Undergraduate students from the School of Business Administration journeyed back to Jamaica this spring to support entrepreneurship there as part of the School's ongoing Jamaica Project. Started by the School's Hyperion Council in 2008, the project provides training to small- and micro- business owners in the island nation.

Business Majors Can Now Bolster Credentials with Focus on the Environment

Ecosystem Science and Policy
The School of Business has partnered with the University of Miami Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy to provide students a unique undergraduate program that explores the business of environmental issues, as part of the School's continuing growth in interdisciplinary studies.

School Well Represented in Contest to Find Nation's Most Influential People in Health Care

Most Influential People in Healthcare

The finalists in Modern Healthcare magazine's 2011 "100 Most Influential People in Healthcare" competition include three members of the School's Advisory Board to Programs in Health Sector Management and Policy, two of whom are also alumni of the School.

Kiplinger's Personal Finance - July 2011 - An article cited research by Alok Kumar, the Gabelli Asset Management Professor of Finance, which found that the demand for penny stocks increases during tough economic times and that people who are predisposed to buy lottery tickets also like penny stocks. Article 

Smart Money - June 27, 2011 - An article about the changing face of shopping malls included insight from Arun Sharma, a professor of marketing, who explained the reasons behind an increase in the quality of shopping mall eating establishments. Article  

The Washington Post - July 25, 2011 - A business blog cited research by Alok Kumar, the Gabelli Asset Management Professor of Finance, which found that the demand for penny stocks increases during tough economic times and that people who are predisposed to buy lottery tickets also like penny stocks. The Miami Herald - June 21, 2011 - An article about MBA internships prominently featured information about the School's internship program with Royal Caribbean and Bacardi, in which students work at each company during a single internship. The article included photographs of all five students and comments from Mary Young, director of the School's Ziff Graduate Career Services Center, who noted that the School has seen "an increase not only in the number of internships, but in the number of local companies offering them." The Washington Post - June 8, 2011 - A "BlogPost" article about the Spirit Airlines "Weiner Sale" promotion linked to the controversy involving U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner included comments made by Arun Sharma, a professor of marketing, to The Miami Herald. The comments were also picked up the The Seattle Times, The (Charleston, SC) Post and Courier and Florida Trend magazine. Article  

The Miami Herald - June 7, 2011 - Arun Sharma, a professor of marketing, was quoted in an article about a Spirit Airlines promotion called "The Weiner Sale," which followed the controversy involving U.S. Congressman Anthony Weiner. Article

The Miami Herald - June 3, 2011 - An article about a Miami-Dade Chamber of Commerce conference session on the region's banking industry included comments by Ken Colwell, the director of the School's entrepreneurship programs, who as an audience member noted "When I talk to businesses, they talk about how they can't get credit and can't get financing." Article

All Things Considered (National Public Radio)
- May 31, 2011 -
A segment about the Miami Heat's winning season and player LeBron James' move to Miami highlighted research from Vidhi Chhaochharia, George Korniotis and Alok Kumar, all members of the School's finance faculty, which found that in states where people are more optimistic, economic recessions are weaker, expansions are stronger, and the economic recovery is faster. The segment included quotes from Kumar, who said "It's not unreasonable to conjecture that local optimism generated by a local sports team acts as a Prozac for the local economy. So I can say: Go Heat." Transcript / Audio 

AméricaEconomía - May 28, 2011 - An article about the growing demand for MBA education among physicians and other health care professionals noted the School's program and included insight from Steven Ullmann, director of the School's programs in health sector management and policy. Article
