PBL winners

Four members of the University of Miami's Phi Beta Lambda (PBL), a business career student organization at the School of Business, took home seven awards at the annual State Leadership Conference competition.

Tyler McIntyre

A company founded by UM School of Business sophomore Tyler McIntyre has been named in Inc. magazine's third annual report on America's most innovative college start-ups. McIntyre, who majors in entrepreneurship, marketing and finance, last year won an elevator pitch contest sponsored by The Launch Pad at UM, then went on to launch Lucid Messenger, a messaging application for the Blackberry, iPhone and Android mobile devices. McIntyre's venture is among just 14 start-ups nationwide that made the list this year.

The School of Business has partnered with the CFO Alliance to establish the national organization's South Florida chapter and a series of roundtable discussions for senior financial executives. The partnership kicked off in February with a breakfast meeting and presentation entitled "The Changing Role of the CFO," which was led by "DJ" Nanda, an accounting professor at the School.

School Partners with Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce to Host Premier Forum on Education, Entrepreneurship & Exports

The School of Business has partnered with the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce to co-host a premier trade and policy forum on education, entrepreneurship and exports and their role in competitiveness and economic development. The "First E³ Summit of the Americas 2011" will be held April 7, 2011 in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Keynote speakers from the School include Frances Aldrich Sevilla-Sacasa, the interim dean, Ken Colwell, the director of entrepreneurship programs, and Joseph Ganitsky, a research professor and director of the Center for International Business Education and Research.

UM MBAs Win ACG Cup Case Competition for the Third Time  

ACG Cup Winners
For the third year in a row a team of MBA students from the School of Business Administration has won first place and $5,000 at the annual South Florida "ACG Cup" competition, sponsored by the Association for Corporate Growth (ACG).

EFE - March 29, 2011 - The leading Spanish language news wire service published an article about the School's co-sponsorship of an economic development conference in Puerto Rico in partnership with the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce. The article was published by several media outlets including MSN Latino Noticias, Yahoo! Noticias, and Terra. Article

In an article focusing on the best ways for entrepreneurs to find angel investors, Susan Amat, a management lecturer and executive director of The Launch Pad, offers advice, saying entrepreneurs should network within their own industry. "Pursue investors who have good connections and understand the market, providing a value add beyond financial assistance," she said. Article 

 

Miami Today - March 17, 2011 - An article about MBA and undergraduate business programs highlighted the School's cross-disciplinary programs, particularly in health sector management and policy, as well as its accelerated master in accounting program and the addition of electives to the School's Executive MBA program. The article included quotes from Linda Neider, vice dean of internal university relations, global initiatives/cross-disciplinary programs and undergraduate business programs, and Anuj Mehrotra, vice dean of faculty and graduate business programs.

 

Harvard Business Review - March 15, 2011 - In a blog posting, Robert Plant, an associate professor of computer information systems, offered tips for how to select a vendor for enterprise resource planning which he has also written about in his research. Article

Computerworld - March 7, 2011 - An article cited tips from, Robert Plant, an associate professor of computer information systems, on how CIOs could learn from physicians how to deliver difficult messages and communicate effectively with senior management - tips first published in a Harvard Business Review blog. Article   

 

Kiplinger's Personal Finance - March, 2011 - An article cited research by Alok Kumar, the School's Gabelli Asset Management Professor of Finance, which found "confirmation bias" common on stock message boards where investors huddle around others who agree with their prospects about a stock, which leads to investor overconfidence and investment mistakes. Article     

 

Florida Trend - March, 2011 - A special section on MBA programs across Florida included information on the School's programs and featured a profile of, Nicholas Okoro, an MBA student who founded and served as the director of U-Cane Initiative, a service organization designed to offer local youngsters social, educational and athletic activities. Article

C-SPAN Television - Feb. 28, 2011 - The panel session titled "Patient-centered Care and Accountable Organizations in an Era of Health Care Reform," from the Global Business Forum, which was organized by the School of Business, was aired in its entirety. The segment also aired on Feb. 25. Video
