- June, 2010 Issue -
| Greetings!:
Latest News on the 2010 PEP Grants! The Five Most Frequently Asked Questions...
(#1) When Will the 2010 PEP Grant Applications Be Released? While there has not been an official release date published at this time, we have heard that the PEP Grant application will be released no later than June 30, 2010!
(#2) When is the Deadline for the Grant? In the past, the Office of Safe & Drug-Free Schools (OSDFS) set a 6-week deadline for this grant. For example, if the PEP application is released on June 30th, it will be due in mid-August.
(#3) We Won a PEP Grant Several Years Ago, Can We Apply Again? If the OSDFS uses the same criteria as last year, school districts who have received PEP Grant funds in the past can apply for this year's competition as long as they do not have an active PEP Grant. In other words, if your school district is currently receiving PEP funds, you will not be allowed to apply.
(#4) What's the Best Way to Know Exactly When the PEP Application is Released? There are several ways to "get the jump" on the 1,000 or so school districts and community-based organizations that will most likely apply for this year's grant.
- Get a free Email Subscription to our "PE Blog." When you're on this website, just sign-up on the right-hand sidebar. We'll post up-to-date PEP information on this site as we heard and/or learn about it.
- Grants.gov is the government's website for all federal grants. Here you will be able to search for grants, get an auto-generated e-mail alert, and/or get registered to be able to submit your PEP Grant application online. Please note that it may take you up to two weeks to get registered to submit online.
- Office of Safe & Drug-Free Schools is the federal agency handling the PEP Grants. This is the best website for general Carol M White PEP Grant information. However, please note that it may take as long as a week after the RFP has been posted on Grants.gov before it appears on this site. Many have learned this fact "the hard way" last year!
- Google Alerts: Using Google Alerts is another cool way to find out when the PEP Grant RFP has been released. Just type in the desired search words (i.e., 2010 Carol M White PEP Grants, 2010 PEP Grant ), and you'll receive an instant alert via e-mail! This is a free service too!
(#5) How Much Money Can We Get? Your school district can request up to $1.5 million over a three year period to strengthen K-12 physical education! For a complete list of 2009 PEP Grant winners and the amount awarded for their first funding year, please click here.
Best of luck to each of you!!

The Virtual PE Administrator! Want to add a greater level of student and teacher accountability to your PEP Grant application? A poorly-developed process for data collection and program assessment is often an "under-performing" area (i.e., this is where most folks lose points) for grant writing teams. To get the maximum amount of points possible, your grant proposal will need to consider the following:
- Upkeep of Student Data: Did you explain how the proposed grant's project design will create and store measurable data (i.e., individual students' nutrition,
physical activity, fitness, BMI, and standards-based assessments) that "moves with the student" each year?
- Clear Process for Handling Data: Does your district's PE data management plan explain how large amounts of K-12 student health and fitness data will be stored, retrieved, and updated by PE teachers during the five required data collection cycles?
- Collecting and Storing GPRA Data: Do you have a way to collect and monitor the mandated GPRA data (Proposed Requirement 9)?
- Traditional or Transparent Grading? How transparent is your proposed data management plan? Will parents be able to see their student's progress in real time? Can your PE teachers compare student growth over multi-year time periods? How do you move fitness data from school to school (i.e., elementary school to middle school)?
Why Web-Based is Best! While there are a variety of excellent computer/PDA software programs on today's market to track and monitor student growth at a single school, a web-based application has the ability to manage and maintain large amounts of student data effectively.
Uniquely Designed for K-12 Physical Education! Listed below are several of the many benefits and"one-of-a-kind" features solely found in the Virtual PE Administrator:
- Not a PC User? A web-based platform can be used by both PC and Mac users.
- Forget Your Laptop? You can update student data with any web-accessible computer, iPad, or iPhone!
- Pre-loaded PE Standards! This comes pre-load with PE Standards (aligned to NASPE and individual State PE Standards) and grade-appropriate grading rubrics. No need to "re-invent the wheel" here!
- "Personal PE Assistant" Features! We have also designed this innovative resource with a variety of time-saving administrative features (i.e., auto-generated forms and reports), and auto-default scores when assessing students.
- Custom-Designed PE
Resources! The VPE system is also includes the ability to create custom-designed curriculum resources with your school district's logo on all instructional products, including - Instructional Gym Posters, Teacher Manuals, Pacing Guides, your own District PE website, etc.
- Other: PE teachers can also track and monitor student progress on Jump Rope Skills, Basketball Skills, Jugging Skills, or other items as created. You can also track and monitor student achievement on a variety of other individualized assessments such as "Bigger, Stronger, Faster" and "Foundational Fitness."
Free District-Wide Cost Quotes: To obtain school district costs, please fill-out the "State Administrators On-Line Form" with your contact info and indicate the number of schools and physical education teachers in your district. If desired, we can also provide you with "PEP Grant appropriate text" that has been used in numerous winning PEP grants!
Thanks,
Artie Kamiya, Publisher Artie@greatactivities.net

New "Shape of the Nation" Report
| Background: Here's a great PE advocacy item for everyone! The 2010 Shape of the Nation Report: Status of Physical Education in the USA from NASPE and the American Heart Association brings attention to the need for quality K-12 physical education programs that increase the health, academic performance and well-being of all children and adolescents.
Data for Your State! The report provides current information on the status of physical education in each of the states and the District of Columbia. You can use this information for school PTA presentations, letters to school board members, and other state policymakers. Download the entire report to see your states' status. A few highlights:
- Good News: Incremental improvements have been made in the last five years in the number of states that require physical education (17% increase) and student assessment in physical education (26% increase).
- Bad News: More states now allow waivers and exemptions from physical education classes (77% increase) and no progress has been made in providing daily physical education in all grades K-12 since the last release of the report in 2006.
- Good/Bad News: Forty-eight states have their own state standards for physical education, but only 34 states (67%) require local districts to comply or align with these standards.
- Only five states require physical education in every grade level K-12.
- Only one state aligns with the nationally recommended 150 minutes per week of physical education in elementary school and 225 minutes per week in middle and high school.
