Welcome Aboard!
Greetings!
Background: Welcome to the first issue of the Carol M White PEP Grant Newsletter! There are four general purposes for this new monthly publication: - To provide an active forum for sharing valuable and timely information to new and continuing Carol M White PEP Grant funded Project Directors, Central Office Staff and teachers.
- To help disemminate the "lessons learned" by PEP Grant winners to all interested Physical Education Supervisors and teachers.
- To encourage more schools and school districts to implement a comprehensive physical education program model as described in the Comprehensive Physical Education Profile (C-PEP) model.
- To recognize innovative schools and school districts who are doing great things with and without PEP Grant funding.
Constant Contact: With the Carol M White PEP Grant Newsletter, you will be in constant contact with other PEP Grant recipients across the United States and will be able to read and share practical tips and pointers for creating a research-based physical education program for all K-12 students. Share Created Documents and Videos: Another very important aspect of this newsletter is the ability to instantly download archived documents (i.e., Word, Powerpoint, pdf) and view streaming video clips archived on the web. As you and your fellow teachers learn more about the new and exciting directions that physical education is taking at the national level, it is hoped that we will all be able share the existing curriculum documents for the benefit of all students across the United States. Sincerely,

Artie Kamiya, Publisher

PE Spotlight: Wake County Public School System (Raleigh, NC)
|
Background: The Wake County Public School System received two back-to-back Carol M White PEP Grants for their "comprehensive physical education model" based on 20 research-based criteria. Special thanks to Ann Hulslander Dishong, Senior Administrator for K-12 Healthful Living, and Ben Stern, Coordinating Teacher for K-12 Healthful Living, for providing us with the information and "words of advice" in this article.
Provide us with your school district's demographics. The Wake County Public School System (WCPSS) is the largest school district in North Carolina with 157 schools, approximately 135,000 K-12 students and 400 K-12 physical education teachers. The school district reflects a diverse student population with 47.4% minority (26.5% Black, 11.1% Hispanic, 5.4% Asian, 4.2% multiracial, and .3% Native American) and approximately 30% qualifying for federal free and/or reduced lunch status.
In writing your
grant, you used a new evaluation tool called the Comprehensive Physical
Education Profile (C-PEP). What is C-PEP? The Comprehensive Physical Education Profile (C-PEP) provided us with a "curriculum blueprint" based on 20 "success factors." Like CDC's School Health Index,
C-PEP provides a school or school district with key measures on the quality
of the overall physical education program. In doing so, a school
district can measure how well their physical education teachers has
been provided support and direction in terms of a written curriculum, a taught
curriculum, a tested curriculum, and teacher training. To see a pdf copy of the C-PEP article, please click here.
How did you use your PEP Grant funds? With
our grants, we able been able to create a stronger infrastructure for our K-12
physical education program as measured by the C-PEP model. This included the enhancement of existing initiatives and the expansion of newer programs. Examples of these are found in four major areas: (1) written curriculum, (2) taught curriculum, (3) tested curriculum, and (4) teacher training opportunities.
(1) Written Curriculum Examples:
(2) Taught Curriculum Examples:
(3) Tested Curriculum Examples:
(4) Teacher Training Opportunities
Your school district has been able to successfully implement two PEP Grants. What words of advice do you have for new PEP Grant school districts? Well, the most important thing would be to understand all of your school district's budget and purchasing procedures. This includes rules on purchase orders, contracts, personal service agreements, subsitute teacher pay, and other financial issues. The next item would be to know the required GPRA measures and hire a good evaluator. Other suggestions include:
- Make sure your vendors are interested in your "bottom line" (i.e., successful implementation of your grant), not their bottom line (i.e., just making another sale).
- Know where you are going to store your purchased items. Is it better to "drop-ship" them directly to the school or keep them in the warehouse until needed?
- Develop a yearly time line for all necessary evaluations, student fitness scores, purchasing of equipment, and other scheduled events.
- If possible, contact an experienced PEP Grant winner in your state and have a face-to-face meeting. Ask him/her for advice on a regular basis.
Any other thoughts for the successful implementation of a PEP Grant? It always helps to have a sense of humor and to be flexible when things don't go as planned. Realize that some teachers are going to be more successful than others. Plan ahead. If you hate the required paperwork, tackle it first thing in the morning. Always follow-up, even with your better teachers and principals. Other:
- Don't always rely on e-mail to communicate important dates/meetings to teachers. When in doubt, leave a phone message and request a reply via e-mail or phone.
- Whenever possible, distribute equipment/supplies at your teacher trainings or workshops. If this is not possible, make sure the equipment/supplies get to the teachers within a two week window.
- "Make friends before you need them." In other words, make sure you are on good terms with all key individuals... your Office of Safe & Drug-Free Schools contact, your administrators, the warehouse manager, your finance officer, etc.
- Always watch your budget! Know how much you have spent and how much you need to spend.
Do you have any job openings for the coming school year? Because of the size of the school district, we are always looking to hire energetic and motivated physical education teachers at all grade levels. Please see our Employment Opportunities website if you are interested in applying for jobs.

Other Physical Education Grants & Opportunities
|
Description: The purpose of this section is to provide physical education teachers with on-going sources of grant opportunities as they become available.
(1) "CVS Community Grants." CVS
Pharmacy Community Grants are currently accepting proposals for
programs targeting children under age 18 with disabilities that
address: health and rehabilitation services; a greater level of
inclusion in student activities and extracurricular programs;
opportunities or facilities that give greater access to physical
movement; and play. Maximum Award: Varies. Eligibility: Public schools with programs for children under age 18 with disabilities. Deadline: Applications accepted through October 2008. Website: For more information, please click here.
(2) "Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation "Quickball Grants." Quickball Grants This grant makes Quickball resources available to grow baseball and softball at a grassroots level through the game of Quickball. Quickball is a national baseball enhancement program that allows children to learn the basics of baseball in a fun, fast-paced way. Deadline: Applications are being accepted now through January 15, 2009. Website: For more information, please click here.
(3) Fulbright Teacher/Administrator Exchange Program. For U.S. teachers, this opportunity involves a year, semester or six-week direct exchange of teaching positions with a counterpart in another country teaching the same subject(s) at the same level. Fulbright program staff in the U.S. and abroad match U.S. and overseas candidates in the spring of each year. Fulbright staff then propose matched-exchanges that each candidate and each school involved in the application process must approve before final selection to the program takes place. For U.S. administrators, the Fulbright program offers non-simultaneous work-shadowing assignments with an overseas counterpart. These exchanges may be from three to six weeks in length, but each partner must exchange to the other's school during the same academic year. For a country listing and more information about these opportunities, see the Administrator Exchanges section of our website. Deadline: October 15, 2008 Website: For more information, please click here.
Share Your Success With Us: Have you ever written and/or received a community or foundation grant? Do you have any grant success stories you'd like to share with others? If so, please click here to send an e-mail to us with your name and contact information. Type "PE Grants" in the subject line.

A Bridge for Life
|
A BRIDGE FOR LIFE (Author Unknown)
An old man going a lone highway,
Came at the evening cold and gray
To a chasm vast and deep and wide,
Through which was flowing a swollen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim,
That swollen stream held no fears for him.
But he paused when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim near,
"You are wasting your strength by building here.
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You will never will pass this way.
You have crossed the chasm deep and wide;
Why build you the bridge at the eveningtide?"
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"Many a footstep filled with dread.
For there followeth after me today,
A youth whose feet must pass this way."
"This swollen stream which was naught to me,
To that young boy (or girl) may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim.
Good friend, I am building this bridge for him!"
