Spring, 2009                                                           Volume 2, Issue #2

Greetings!

Welcome to Volume 2, Issue #2!
Due to being extremely busy during the past 7-8 weeks (helping folks with their PEP Grant applications), we were unable to publish a February or March issue on time.  Sorry about that.  So here is a combined February/March/April issue. Again, it is our hope that this Carol M. White PEP Grant Newsletter™ will be an on-going encouragement to you and the students you are privileged to serve!

Going to AAHPERD? If you are, please come by our booth and introduce yourself! We'll be in Booth #1128.

Are You a First Timer? Is this the first time you have received the Carol M. White PEP Grant Newsletter?  If so, please visit the Archives Section found at the bottom of this page for our previous four issues.

Our Mission: There are four general purposes for this growing, monthly publication:
  1. To provide an active forum for sharing valuable and timely information to new and continuing Carol M. White PEP Grant-funded Project Directors, Central Office Staff and teachers.
  2. To help disseminate the "lessons learned" by PEP Grant winners to all interested Physical Education Supervisors and teachers.
  3. To encourage more schools and school districts to implement a comprehensive physical education program model as described in the Comprehensive Physical Education Profile (C-PEP) model.
  4. To recognize innovative schools and districts who are doing great things with and without PEP Grant funding.
You can share in this mission by expanding this outreach by forwarding this issue to a friend - And we encourage you to share successes, programs and resources.  If you wish to subscribe to this free, monthly newsletter, click here and submit your e-mail address.

Sincerely,

Artie_Kamiya

resources
Background: Here are a variety of web-available resources for your consideration:

Escambia1. PE Programs in the News! Here is a collection of five PE programs and/or resources that are noteworthy!

  • A.C. Stelle Middle School- Derek Mena, chair of the physical education department at the school, and P.E. teachers Jean Flemion (former National PE Teacher of the Year), Katie Flanagan, and Jennifer Mettler all make physical education challenging and fun for all students!
  • Alberta, Canada- It's always interesting to see what is happening in other countries. Here is a website that has information on Alberta, Canada's K-12 PE frameworks, a daily physical activity initiative
  • Catawba County Schools (NC)- With their PEP Grant funds, Catawaba County Schools became the first school district in the country to adopt the HOPSports program as a district-wide program. A great deal of positive PR was generated as a part of adopting this innovative obesity-prevention program. For example - Daily Business News, WSOC-TV News, Hickory Daily Record Newspaper, and Kids Running. For additional information, please feel free to e-mail Shellie Pfohl, Senior Vice President - Partnerships.
  • "Spectrum of Teaching Styles" Website - We recently received a very kind and encouraging e-mail from Don Morris (co-author of Changing Kids' Games) announcing the development of the Spectrum of Teaching Styles website dedicated to the work of the pioneer physical educator/innovator Muska Mosston. For many of us, Mosston's Spectrum (1966) opened up a new world of possiblities in teaching/reaching students through physical education. A man ahead of his time, Muska introduced the Spectrum of Teaching Styles to the field of Physical Education, but was often excluded by those who disagreed with his strong opinions. This exclusion did not dissuade him - he merely shifted his energies to general education. Years later, invitations to present his theory came from around the world and brought Muska back to his first professional love - physical education.
  • Physical Education PowerPoints - Here is a website filled with a great collection of PowerPoint presentation on a variety of topics including: "Principles of Training," "Body Composition," "Effects of Exercise," "Aerobic and Anaerobic Activity," "History of the Modern Olympics," and "Sport History (US, Australia, England, Europe)."

Northcoast2. Kikaflik Website: KikaFlik ™ was developed by a Pediatric nurse and gymnastics coach to teach a variety of striking and catching skills for children. With KikaFlik kids don't realize they are learning and developing skills, they're simply having fun. For more information, please e-mail Elspeth Robertson.

trainingwheels3. Puberty Education Website: Free education program on puberty, menstrual hygiene and other women's health issues.  This a comprehensive on-line interactive program that addresses the needs of teachers, students and parents. The website provides a flexible format for both classroom use and one to one interaction outside of class by students and parents. For more information, please e-mail Iris Prager.

NMarie.Flowe-Dawson@dpsnc.net

Tell Us About Yourself: This is my 25th year of teaching. 21 of those years have been in Durham Public Schools. I currently teach elementary physical education at Easley Elementary in Durham, North Carolina. I teach almost 700 students in grades kindergarten through 5th. I also work with the Golden Skippers Jump Rope Club afterschool.

What Do You See as the Mission of Your PE Program? The mission of our physical education program is to facilitate each student's ability to develop motor skills, gain an understanding of movement concepts, sustain participation in physical activities, and valuing one's health.

As a Teacher, What Challenges Do You Face?
One of the challenges I face is that of scheduling. I see my students only once each week and know that I need to see them daily. (I am lucky to have classroom teachers and administrators who support the state's "Healthy Active Children" legislation that requires 150 minutes of physical activity a week.  My students participate in active recess on a daily basis.

What Was Your Most Important Accomplishment as a Teacher. For Example, Name Several "proud moments." As a professional, one of my proudest achievements was to become National Board Certified in the first cycle for Physical Education. Another important accomplishment is the development of an Elementary Physical Education Professional Learning Community within Durham Public Schools. (Editor's Note:  Here is a link to another PE-LC - Salem-Keizer Elementary in Oregon).

What Tips Would You Give to Other Teachers? (1) Listen to your students. We observe constantly, we assess regularly, but we don't always hear what our students mean to share with us. (2) We are currently implementing the SPARK Physical Education curriculum in elementary and middle school. I am finding the curriculum to be a good resource for developmentally appropriate instructional strategies. (3) I have worked with pedometers for about six years and find them to be the best tool for keeping children motivated to move. (4) I also appreciate the instructional support materials offered on PE Central.

Favorite Quotation:

"Start from where YOU ARE with what YOU HAVE,
knowing that what you have is plenty enough."
Booker T. Washington

What Are You Most Proud Of? I am most proud of the students I see overcome barriers to stay physically active. I am most honored when former students comes back to tell me about their accomplishments and the good choices they are making.

sample pictClassroom Management Tips? A classroom management tool that has served me well over the years is the marker board at the door. My students are taught to read their introductory directions on the board at the door and enter the Gym doing their first activity. The board gets students on task immediately. It gives them experience reading and applying written directions. It also gives me an opportunity to check in with the classroom teacher without causing our students to wait to get moving.

Booker T pict

The Ballad of Booker T.
By Langston Hughes

Background: Booker T. Washington was a former slave who founded the Tuskegee Institute, became a well-regarded educational leader, and was often criticized. Noted poet Langston Hughes takes on Washington's critics with this poem.

Booker T.
Was a practical man.
He said, Till the soil
And learn from the land.

Let down your bucket
Where you are.
Your fate is here
And not afar.

To help yourself
And your fellow man,
Train your head,
Your heart, and your hand.

For smartness alone's
Surely not meet-
If you haven't at the same time
Got something to eat.

Thus at Tuskegee
He built a school
With book-learning there
And the workman's tool.

He started out
In a simple way
For yesterday
Was not today.

Sometimes he had
Compromise in his talk
For a man must crawl
Before he can walk

And in Alabama in '85
A joker was lucky
To be alive.

But Booker T.
Was nobody's fool:
You may carve a dream
With an humble tool.

The tallest tower
Can tumble down
If it be not rooted
In solid ground.

So, being a far-seeing
Practical man,
He said, Train your head,
Your heart, and your hand.

Your fate is here
And not afar,
So let down your bucket
Where you are.
