Our Mission: There are four general purposes for this growing, monthly publication:
To provide an active forum for sharing valuable and timely information to new and continuing Carol M. White PEP Grant-funded Project Directors, Central Office Staff and teachers.
- To help disseminate the "lessons learned" by PEP Grant winners to all interested Physical Education Supervisors and teachers.
- To encourage more schools and school districts to implement a comprehensive physical education program model as described in the Comprehensive Physical Education Profile (C-PEP) model.
- To recognize innovative schools and districts who are doing great things with and without PEP Grant funding.
You can share in this mission by expanding this outreach by forwarding this issue to a friend - And we encourage you to share successes, programs and resources. If you wish to subscribe to this free, monthly newsletter, click here and submit your e-mail address.

Strategies to "SPARK-Up" Your Physical Education Class
Jeff Mushkin and Paul Rosengard
An objective of SPARK PE is to increase the amount of time students are in moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA). MVPA can be described as activity at the level of a brisk walk (moderate) or greater (vigorous). A realistic goal of 50% or more of time in MVPA can be achieved using the following strategies:
Look for Movement If you don't see enough, change the activity. (E.g., do a different drill or a timed challenge; reduce group size; add more balls or more chasers; widen boundaries; etc.)
Non-Elimination Do not use drills or games that eliminate children and make them non-participants. SPARK activities use "re-entry areas" (e.g., a student who is tagged travels to the re-entry area, completes a task, and then re-enters the game).
Be Line Conscious! Never have students wait their turn for equipment without giving them something else to do. Ideally, equipment ratios would be appropriate, but in cases where there isn't enough, read Limited Equipment/Large Class strategies located near the back of each section.
Individual/Partner/Group To decrease transition time, keep similar-sized groupings throughout the lesson, or combine ready-made groups/pairs rather than creating new ones. All SPARK Activities note the grouping needed with an icon of an individual, partner, or group on the top, right-hand corner.
Want to Learn More? SPARK workshops provide detailed instruction on these concepts and many others. Inquire about hosting a SPARK workshop on a district professional growth day (SPARK comes to you) or attending an Institute in San Diego next summer (you come to SPARK). See our website: www.sparkpe.org Or call: 800-SPARKPE

 It's Still Just a Game
Author Unknown
The sun melts the mist of a crisp autumn morn.
Young children gather in a lot where the grass is badly worn.
There are no goals, no scoreboards, there are no
marching bands.
No speaker system blaring out each successful first and ten.
No coach directing the official to measure that gain again.
But here in the worn sandlot, the children they play,
With a zest, a spirit, a joy, shown in their own way.
They run, they throw, they catch, but it's all in fun.
And after the game no one races around screaming
that they won.
I watched them for a brief moment, and wondered,
isn't it a shame.
That we have lost sight of the fact,
It's still just a game!
This
inspirational story is an example of the many other stories, teacher tips, games,
and activities contained in the PEP Club Archives, the largest single
collection of games, activities, and physical education teaching tips
in the universe! Access to the PEP Club is $59.95 a year. Please call (800) 927-0682 for discounted rates for multi-school subscriptions.
