schoolParsippany-Troy Hills School District
(Parsippany, New Jersey)

Background:
The Parsippany-Troy Hills School District was the recipient of the U.S. Department of Education's Carol M. White Physical Education Program (P.E.P.) Grant. The goal of the grant is to assist the school district by providing $400,000 to expand and improve the physical education and health program.

Using the grant funds, we created a "Wellness for Life" program to teach students to monitor their personal fitness and to align the physical education and health programs with the New Jersey state standards. The district has purchased new technology to help students develop their own personal fitness plan. The technology includes personal fitness hardware and software, hand-held computers for physical educators, new computers for the elementary teachers, heart rate monitors and cardiovascular equipment for a wellness center at each high school.

"No knowledge is more crucial than knowledge about health.
Without it, no other life goal can be successfully achieved."
Ernest Boyer

Our Shared Vision:
We are committed to the concept of "Wellness." We envision a well-articulated K-12 program, supported by research and professional practice that prepares all students to actively and effectively achieve and promote lifelong wellness. As we move forward, we are compelled to promote healthy students, healthy schools, and healthy communities.

Downloadable Health Ed Course Outlines: An example of our school district's commitment to strong physical education and health education programs can be seen in the development of our elementary, middle and high school health education approved course outlines. Downloadable copies of these health education course outlines can be found here.

Our Shared Outcomes: Our health and physical education programs will foster the physical and cognitive skills that allow students to feel comfortable and confident as they pursue lifelong fitness goals. A quality health and physical education program strives to provide a supportive environment that helps students to understand positive competition, respect for others, and the satisfaction of doing their best. All students must learn to compete to meet goals and reach standards, but competition should never be a source of humiliation or intimidation. In a quality health and physical education program, teachers help students understand and control the ways they compete and how they respond to winning and losing.

Our Shared Partners: As a team of educators, students, and parents, we are committed to the ideal that we can make a difference in our children's lives. Please join us as we create "Wellness" centers at each of our high schools, as well as a "Wellness Club." Our middle schools will be engaged in fitness assessments and health assessments through the use of personal fitness assessment system, hand-held computers and heart rate monitors. Our elementary schools will also have heart rate monitors and hand-held computers to facilitate assessment and give our students individualized feedback. As you can tell from this brief description, this is an exciting time for our health and physical educators. We will continue to need the support and commitment of the community as we strive to implement this program and continue to allow this opportunity for our students to grow and evolve.

PE for the Whole Child: PlaySport is focused upon the development of the whole child. The developmental games within this awesome website have been designed to help kids, ages six to twelve, develop an understanding and competency of the skills and tactics associated with playing sports while at the same time developing important skills that can be transferred to other aspects of their lives. Practitioners from all sectors (e.g., teachers, coaches, recreation leaders, public health workers, university staff and students, etc.) from around the world can all benefit from this resource.

"Teaching for Understanding" Model: PlaySport embraces "Teaching Games for Understanding," an approach that taps into kids' inherent desire to play 'teaching kids games by playing games'. By playing games that are fun and adaptable to every skill level, PlaySport will prepare kids to participate in a wide range of sports with greater success and enjoyment.

Physical Literacy for Every Body: Each PlaySport activity also focuses upon a specific FUNdamental skill. The FUNdamental skills section is directly linked back to Canada's Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) Plan which has been designed to foster the development of physical literacy across a wide range of activities.

Game Categories: The PlaySport activities are separated into four categories: Target, Net/Wall, Striking/Fielding, and Invasion/Territory. Each category focuses on specific game strategies that will assist kids in developing the skills they need to participate in sports.

Playsport.net is an educational website which allows you to search for activities based on the equipment you have, the skills you want to teach, the complexity of the game or the space you have available. Search their database of activities and view their online instructional videos:

Tips for Giving Instructions and Feedback
Jeff Mushkin and Paul Rosengard

Here are 5 strategies to be more efficient giving instructions and providing students with feedback to create a positive environment for your class. For more great ideas, visit the SPARK website at: http://www.sparkpe.org/

1) "When" Before "What"
When giving instructions, tell students WHEN you want them to do something before you tell them WHAT you want them to do. The desired outcome from this strategy is to reduce the number of "false starts" (students starting before you have finished all of the directions) that typically disrupt a lesson.  For example, if you wanted the students to get a ball and line up around the perimeter of the gym for a game of "Everyone's It" Tag, you would state the following: "When I say 'go,' please get a ball from the racks and line up around the perimeter of the gym. Ready... 'Go!'"

2) "The Object Is "______" & "You Do That By "______"
When describing an activity, try: "The object of the activity is ________; you do that by _________. Ready? Go!" This strategy helps keep your instructions focused and concise. You'll spend less time on instructions and your students will get more time in physical activity.

3) The 80/20 Rule: Don't Ask - "Any Questions?"
This strategy will help to increase time that the students are physically active in your PE classes.  After you give your instructions, assume that 80% of students understand and the other 20% don't. SPARK-trained teachers rarely ask "Class, are there any questions?" They just get going!  You will find that most students will "get it" while participating in the activity. While your students are moving, play the role of "plumber" and "fix the leaks" by providing individuals with any additional guidance as needed.

4) 3 to 1 Ratio
Try giving three positive feedback statements to every one corrective statement. This helps build student confidence and increases the likelihood of their listening. For example, if members of the class are off-task, you may want to say a corrective statement - "Class, please stay at your own activity station." When this happens, quickly follow-up with three positive statements such as "I see Jimmy staying at his activity station. Good job!" or "Class, I really like the way you are helping one another at each station." However, if students are doing something unsafe to themselves or others, correct them immediately!

5) Individual Feedback Too!
Students love individual attention too. It's always good to provide individual feedback when students are working alone or in small groups. Try not to shout across the gym if someone is doing something good. Just walk toward that person and give him/her individual attention and praise.

Want to Learn More? SPARK workshops provide detailed instruction on these concepts and many others.  Inquire about hosting a SPARK workshop on a district professional growth day (SPARK comes to you) or attending an Institute in San Diego next summer (you come to SPARK). builder

The Builder
Author Unknown

A builder built a temple,
He wrought it with care and skill.
Pillars, windows and arches,
Were fashioned to meet his will.

Men said when they saw its beauty:
"It shall never know decay,
Great is thy skill O' builder,
Thy fame shall endure for the age."

A teacher too, built a temple.
She wrought it with skill and care.
Forming each pillar with patience,
Laying each stone with care.

No one saw the unceasing effort,
No one knew of the marvelous plan.
For the concerned work of the teacher
Was unseen by the eyes of man.

Gone is the builder's temple,
Crumbled into dust.
Pillars, windows and arches,
Food for consuming rust.

But the temple the teacher built,
Share endure while the ages roll.
For the beautiful unseen temple
Was the child's immortal soul.
