After almost a year in development, the Virtual PE Administrator is about to be released!  This new web portal (release date: August 31st) will track and monitor specific grade-by-grade student outcomes (i.e., PE Power Standards) from the time they enter school until they graduate.  With this new technology, physical educators will be able to:
  • Track student progress on PE State Standards and/or locally developed benchmarks.
  • Create and share lesson plans based on skill themes, Selectivity units, Sport Ed sport seasons.
  • Archive in-class team scores, brackets, team photos, etc.
  • Automatically generate student and team awards or certificates.
  • Create and share grading rubrics, curriculum maps, and district-wide exams.
  • Generate standards-based progress reports and move towards a valid standardized grading program (i.e., not just based on dressing out) as suggested by NASPE and other physical education organizations.
  • Create and share PowerPoint presentations (i.e., nutrition, weight management, and fitness lessons) and to store video clips of correctly performed skills and procedures (i.e., procedures for correctly putting on heart rate monitors, volleyball bump, tennis serve, etc.).
Student Fitness Profiles/Portfolios: The web portal will also be designed so that students will be able to complete individual student fitness and nutrition surveys, nutritional food analysis profiles, web based fitness and assessment records, and upload photos/video clips to each student's "Virtual PE Portfolio."

For More Information: Please feel free to email us or call (800) 927-0682 if you or your school district is interested in learning more about this ambitious and worthwhile project.

Our Mission: There are four general purposes for this growing, monthly publication:
  1. To provide an active forum for sharing valuable and timely information to new and continuing Carol M. White PEP Grant-funded Project Directors, Central Office Staff and teachers.
  2. To help disseminate the "lessons learned" by PEP Grant winners to all interested Physical Education Supervisors and teachers.
  3. To encourage more schools and school districts to implement a comprehensive physical education program model as described in the Comprehensive Physical Education Profile (C-PEP) model.
  4. To recognize innovative schools and districts who are doing great things with and without PEP Grant funding.

Sincerely,

Artie_Kamiya
Artie Kamiya, Publisher

PS: If you are a Central Office administrator and would like to have all of your PE teachers added to the newsletter, just e-mail me an Excel spreadsheet with each teacher's first name, last name, and e-mail address.

denver schools logoDenver Public Schools:
In this issue, we are pleased to highlight the Denver Public Schools' Physical Education Department.
Led by Eric Larsen (Physical Education Coordinator), DPS continues to be a leading advocate for quality physical education.  With one of the most "cutting-edge" programs in the country, DPS has developed an outstanding support infrastructure that promotes the use of a comprehensive physical education model (e.g., aligns the written, taught, and tested curriculum) for K-12 physical education. Examples of these "cutting edge" practices include:

  • Physical Education Best Practices: This is an easy-to-understand pdf document that outlines the three "stages" (Developing, Effective, Highly Effective) of effective teaching typically found within our content area.  The document can be used to evaluate individual physical educators or an entire department. It is divided into 4 instructional areas - (1) Climate, (2) Class Management, (3) Instruction, (4) Activity Time, and (5) Environment.

  • PE Job Interview Questions: A great resource for principals when interviewing potential physical education teachers. Developed by NASPE.
  • Parent Page: One of the most timely resources on the DPS website is a "Parent Page." Check it out!
Do you know a school district that's doing great things for physical education?  Please feel free to nominate your school district or others that you admire.   If so, please click here to send an e-mail to us with your name and contact information. Type "Great PE School District" in the subject line.
resources
Here are a few neat PE resources for your consideration-
  • Character Ed - NetWorks Basketball: After successfully implementing the "BC Character @ Work" program in Wake County (NC) schools and YMCAs since 2006, Networks Basketball is expanding to offer the program nationwide.  The BCs provide teachers with the techniques, strategies, and venues to combine "cool, fun activities" with the "Do the Work" message, creating relationships and experiences that transform thoughts, words and actions - it's a "teachable moment" machine!
  • sample pict Game Creations - This is a "create-a-game" book designed for youth in grades 4-9. Written by Susan Morris and used with her students. Contains non-traditional games and a lesson plan for students so they can make up their own game creations in your class. Using this type of activity in class builds social and organizational skills, independence, responsibilities, freedom and enhances positive leadership qualities. In my seventh and eighth grade physical education class at the Lawrence Junior High School in Fairfield Maine, we do the traditional physical education games that have been done year after year in class and we also do something called Game Creations. Students in my class are paired up with a classmate and they must create a game that I have never seen before. I find that peer teaching creates an atmosphere where students feel more comfortable presenting their idea . They work together spending a great deal of time and effort developing their "own" product. - Susan Morris

    QUOTES from teachers in Maine...

"As we get away from the typical format with regards to Physical Education. We at York High School, have used this section within our Sophomore Adventure Curriculum. With specific guidelines and incentives, all students are allowed to be creative, adaptational, and spontaneous. The unit has been neat and received with great success." Rick Brault, Physical Education Teacher at York High School.

"Over the years having the opportunity to try the games in Game Creations, has been a very positive experience for my physical education students. They are eager to try new games that other student's have created. Susan's games and game creation units encouraged me to add Game Creations to my 8th grade curriculum. Kids really do know how to play and make it fun- they have a wealth of creativity and new ideas! Students have the opportunity in presenting their games in leadership roles, plus the opportunity to critique others as peer learners." Deb Pluck, Physical Education Teacher at Hale-Dale Middle School.

Teachers and Teaching

"The dream begins with a teacher who believes in you, who tugs and pushes and leads you to the next plateau, sometimes poking you with a sharp stick called 'truth.'"
~Dan Rather

"If a doctor, lawyer, or dentist had 40 people in his office at one time, all of whom had different needs, and some of whom didn't want to be there and were causing trouble, and the doctor, lawyer, or dentist, without assistance, had to treat them all with professional excellence for nine months, then he might have some conception of the classroom teacher's job."
~Donald D. Quinn

"Modern cynics and skeptics see no harm in paying
those to whom they entrust the minds of their children a smaller wage than is paid to those to whom they entrust the
