annpaullsFargo Public School District
Fargo, North Dakota

Fargo Schools Logo

Background: Fargo Public School District (FPSD) is the largest school district in North Dakota serving approximately 11,000 students on 14 elementary, 3 middle schools, and two high school campuses.  With a K-12 staff of 43 physical educators, FPSD has been able to strengthen the existing physical education infrastructure by purchasing additional technology (i.e., heart rate monitors and personal fitness assessment systems), much-needed physical education equipment, and a variety of "Best Practices" strategies (i.e., implementing Professional Learning Communities, standards-based report cards, and partnerships that increase physical activity opportunities) within the physical education setting.

Do You Have Examples of Your Best Practice Strategies? Yes, copies of our Standards-Based report cards, an innovative WalkSmart website, and sample Brain Break Activities for classroom teacher are listed below:

  1. Standards-Based Report Cards: With many school districts across the country looking at Standards-Based Report Cards, we have designed one for physical education!  Please click on the paragraph header to download one of our K-8 (including Adapted Physical Education) standards-based reports cards.
  2. WalkSmart! North Dakota:  We were also able to partner with Walk4Life in the development of a new state-wide walking program.  Through this web-based initiative, we have been able to encourage our students to become more physically active both inside and outside of school. WalkSmart! North Dakota is an interactive, pedometer-based walking program that combines online logging of physical activity with cross-curricular milestones about cities in North Dakota . This program makes it easier than ever to incorporate more physical activity into the school day!
  3. Sample Brain Break Activities: These are "physical activity energizers" that can be used by classroom teachers to increase the level of physical activity during the school day.  Typically, our classroom teachers use these whenever their students need a "burst of activity" to re-focus and re-energize.

What Tips Would You Give to First Year PEP Grant Winners? The most important tip is to develop a well-defined "action plan" with a timeline so that you will have all of your proposed grant activities in a manageable to meet your yearly goals.

What Are You Most Proud Of? Of the many new and exciting programs that we were able to implement, the two that stand out to me was our PowerPoint presentation on academic improvement and the development of our City Wide Spring Fling Health Fair which grew from 100 to almost 800 students and parents attending this year.

  • PowerPoint Presentation:  Here is a copy of a PowerPoint presentation stating the relationship between our PEP Grant activities and academic indicators.
  • Spring Fling Health Fair:  We hosted the fourth annual Spring Fling Health Fair in conjunction with nutrition services and community partners for all Fargo Public School parents and students. The Spring Fling Health Fair takes place at one of our middle schools at night (i.e., 5:30 - 7:30 PM) and is an outgrowth of partnering with other like-minded organizations such as the YMCA, Fargo Park District, area Hospitals, Kids Fitness, All-city PTA, Fargo Marathon, Pride of Dakota, Metro Bussing and Walking trails, American Heart Association, and others.  There will be many activities on display such as Dance Dance Revolution (DDR), video bikes, and lifetime activities such as badminton, and table tennis. We also provide a personal fitness assessment program (TriFIT).

Do You Have Website?  Yes, please click on this LINK to see it.

I Can
By Edgar A. Guest

Background: Edgar A. Guest (1881-1959) began his illustrious career in 1895 at the age of fourteen when his work first appeared the the Detroit
Free Press. His column was syndicated in over 300 newspapers,
and he became known as "The Poet of the People."

Figure it out for yourself my lad. You've got all that the great have had. Two arms, two legs, two hands, two eyes, and a brain to use if you'd be wise.

With this equipment they all began, so start for the top and say "I Can."

Look them over the wise and the great. They take their food from a common plate. With similar knives and forks they use, with similar laces they tie their shoes.

The world consider them brave and smart, but you know - you've got all they had when they made their start.

You can triumph and come to skill, you can be great if you only will. You're well equipped for the fight you choose, you have arms and legs and brains to use.

And people who have risen, great deeds to do, started their lives with no more than you.

You are the handicap you must face. You are the one who must choose your place. You must say where you want to go. How much you'll study the truth to know.

God has equipped you for life, but he lets you decide what you want to be.

The courage must come from the soul within, you must furnish the will to win. So figure it out for yourself my lad, you were born with all the great have had.

With your equipment they all began, so start for the top and say "I Can."

This inspirational poem is an example of the many other stories, teacher tips, games, and activities contained in the PEP Club Archives, the largest single collection of games, activities, and physical education teaching tips in the universe!  Access to the PEP Club is $59.95 a year.  Please call (800) 927-0682 for discounted rates for multi-school subscriptions.
