For this issue's "PE Spotlight," we are happy to recognize one of the country's first PEP Grants with an Adapted Physical Education emphasis - Project ACCESS. This grant was awarded to Anchorage School District (ASD) in 2003.
Background: All Children Can Experience Sports Safely (ACCESS) was developed by the Anchorage School District's Adapted PE Department through the leadership of Pam Skogstad. Designed to be a comprehensive and collaborate effort, Project ACCESS addresses the need for intensive collegial professional development, along with the acquisition of optimal adapted physical education equipment, to significantly improve ASD's Adapted Physical Education (APE) program. It will also address identified gaps in preservice PE preparation, awareness and training at the local, state and national level.
PEP Grant Activities: The project applies the Adapted Physical Education National Standards (APENS) to benefit students with disabilities. The PEP Grant activities included:
- Professional development and collaboration within the APE and PE departments, with national expert presenters with the goal to create state-level APE Standards.
- Learning and applying an alternative assessment that works in inclusion settings.
- Liaison and training at the university level in APE pre-assessment program to build consistency of delivery.
- Incorporation of APE methods and adaptations in regular PE classroom programs, K-12.
- Acquisition of APE equipment for appropriate programming for all grade levels.
APE Resources: The following links provide a variety of great teaching strategies, ideas, and instructional aids:
- Ideas for Teaching Skills and Games: Contains tips for throwing, catching and kicking skills and numerous games for your consideration.
- Equipment Photo Gallery: A great collection of recommended APE equipment for students.
- Latex - Is it Safe in My Class? The use of latex products can be extremely harmful to students and adults. In some cases, even the slightest exposure to
latex can cause symptoms serious enough to require immediate hospitalization.
- APE Resource Page: A comprehensive listing of good resources for Adapted and regular ed PE teachers.
- APE in Rural Alaska:Learn more about how APE can be delivered to rural and isolated communities. This is cool (literally and figuratively)!
- Great APE Teaching Strategies: Please remember to look at students with disabilities as the student (person) first and the disability second. Use the disability as an information guideline for including your student! This webpage contains valuable information to help PE teachers working with students with disabilities and the motor development of those students on the borderline of qualifying for services. It also has a great section on developing a Peer Tutoring Program!
Contact: To learn more about Anchorage School Districts' PEP Grant, please click on the Adapted PE logo below.

Pam is a nationally certified APE instructor (C.A.P.E.) and graduated from UW-LaCrosse with a Master's Degree from Alaska Pacific University. She has served as the President of Alaska AHPERD and Northwest District AAHPERD. Also special thanks to Sharon Vaissiere, Health & PE Curriculum Coordinator! G Great PE Resources for You!
Free PE Fitness Station Signs! Developed by Railyard Fitness, these free exercise
"Signals" are 8-inch illustrations that can be downloaded and
printed for your use. They can be placed on the floor, taped to a cone or wall, or enlarged to poster-size.
Patch Fitness Training Manual: The signs align to the Patch Fitness Training Manual. You can get a free copy of this training manual on the same page as the "Station Signs." The first set of signs are from the "Ground
Based Workout, Lesson Plan #2" in the Patch Fitness Training Manual (page 44).
The
Signals are color-coded: standing exercises are green and crawling or
supine exercises are in red.
We recommend that you do not set up a
workout that has three of either color in a row.
Alternating colors
will give the participant the optimum balance in the workout.
Signals
may be printed in color or black and white.
Special Thanks to Lee Spieker, President and Founder of Railyard Fitness for providing these great resources!
