staffThe Active Life Movement

ALM

Background:  This month I will be traveling to Austin, Texas to meet with the ACTIVE Life Movement staff members to discuss how the principles and concepts of ACTIVE Life can be expanded across the United States. I have been extremely impressed with Founder and CEO, Baker Harrell and his fine group of talented and capable "agents of change." For those of you that do not know, the ACTIVE Life Movement is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization focused on leading a first-of-its kind, national health movement.

Their goal is to find on-going partnerships with physical education teachers and other like-minded individuals who are interested in doing (not just talking) and making positive changes in schools and communities across the country. Here are a few of the many positive ways the ACTIVE Life Movement (Texas) has been involved in initiating changes in Texas:

  • ACTIVE Life Schools: Becoming an ACTIVE Life Partner School gives you access to a customizable school profile page, an easy to use point system for organizing, tracking and reporting school health efforts. A great way to demonstrate both need and change for community, state, or federal level grant applications!
  • ACTIVE Life Community Challenge: This youth leadership program pairs five high school students with five community (or local college) members. Examples include; completing a health-focused community service project, meeting once a month to do a big group healthy activity or event, blogging and tracking their health online weekly, completing an interactive online training, posting videos and photos and continuously inviting others to join in the Challenge.

Background: John Ray works for the Delaware Department of Education and is responsible for K-12 physical education among his other duties for the state. I was fortunate to have met John many years ago when he was in a similar position for the West Virginia Department of Education.  As we talked, it became apparent to me that the state of Delaware had made a variety of great strides through John's leadership.  Please take a few minutes to check out his website. You'll find numerous PE resources such as:
  • "Work Out Your Mind" TV Broadcast (Please forgive the Jack Daniels Ad)
  • Throwing and Catching (K-2) (Word) (PDF)
  • Traveling with Dr. Seuss (K-2) (Word) (PDF)
  • Warming Up to CATCH (K-2) (Word) (PDF)
  • CATCHing Physical Activity (3-5) (Word) (PDF)
  • Cooperation (3-5) (Word) (PDF)
  • Stretching Myself with CATCH (6-8) (Word) (PDF)
  • Walking for Lifetime Fitness (6-8) (Word) (PDF)
