Video: School Program Pilot a Success in UK
Recognizing the importance of project managment as a 21st century life and learning skill, Simon Robertson, PMP, worked on behalf of the PMI United Kingdom (UK) Chapter, and took the lead to start a youth project management program at a local school. One of the schools he approached was the Mill Chase Community Technology College in Bordon, Hampshire. The school's leadership and teachers recognized that although they tended to initiate many projects in their classrooms, the school lacked a structured approach to planning and delivering those projects. Other school goals include the development of effective, lifelong learners and the school felt the project management skills would help the students achieve them.
The school decided to pilot the program to 120 students in the Year 7 cohort, which consists of 11 year olds. Recognizing the young age of the students, they endeavored to build a fun, innovative and engaging curricula that also incorporated key project concepts and vocabulary while adhering to UK standards. They engaged curricula designers to help them build this rigorous and fun program. Working with the chapter, the school applied for and was awarded a grant from PMIEF to fund the program's development. Simon served as the project manager. The pilot was a success ending with enthusiastic presentations by the students who wanted to share their project management knowledge. Going forward, the plan is to expand this program to other schools in the UK and hopefully beyond. The curricula will be available on the PMIEF website shortly for others to use. Thank you to Simon and the PMI UK Chapter for creating this innovative project management program! View this short video to see the highlights of the program. |
