Sharon Belden & Thomas Castonguay
Hotel Viking |
Sharon Belden started 2009 off the right way - by saying "yes." Her wake-up call that New Year's morning was a marriage proposal from boyfriend Tom Castonguay. There really was no other answer for Sharon to give. Taken with Tom since the first time she saw him three years ago at the Boston Beer Summit, Sharon says, "I was there for the beer, but attracted to the muscular guy with the friendly smile." She took a chance, struck up a conversation and found that she worked across the street from him in Beantown - Susan was working on her doctorate at Harvard and Tom was a postdoctoral fellow at Boston University. "My fate was sealed," Sharon says. "Not many PhD chemists can bench press more than 300 pounds!"
A year and a half later, the two were planning their wedding. Having grown up attending St. Mary's Church in Portsmouth, with her parents, Jeffrey and Diane Belden, the decision to tie the knot there was easy for the bride-to-be. All eyes were on her as she approached the altar in her ivory Priscilla of Boston gown, which she chose for its resemblance to Princess Diana's dress. The wedding party celebrated at the Hotel Viking, where guests enjoyed an afternoon tea of lobster salad sandwiches, scones, fruits, truffles and petit fours, along with chocolate covered strawberries and cupcakes, instead of the traditional wedding cake. "I chose the Viking because I wanted to do an afternoon tea reception, and they were willing to expand their standard tea to accommodate our wedding," Sharon says.
Nearly every aspect of the wedding included a personalized touch. Sharon made the tiered cupcake stand, decorating the base with shells and two mini Adirondack chairs as a nod to her family home in the Adirondacks. Even the music gave guests something to talk about. Tom's brother Jason, a professional musician, played keyboard throughout the reception. "People kept asking me where I'd found him!" Sharon says. "He was Fox-TV's 'Connecticut Idol' in 2004, so we were lucky to get him, Tom's brother or not!"
After a honeymoon at a friend's house on Chesapeake Bay, the Castonguays moved to Rye, New York.-MVA

Deciding on a color palette for your wedding?
Girls, flowers, and the color pink have had a complementary marriage for ages. But choosing a color for your bridesmaids or a color to perfectly embellish your wedding day is a tough decision for many brides-to-be. Though your wedding colors reflect who you are and how you want to be perceived, you may find yourself shying away from pink (even if it has been your favorite color since you were five).

This year we encourage you to go bold with Pantone's recently revealed 2011 color of the year, Honeysuckle. A lively fusion of flowers and color, Pantone's Honeysuckle will allow you to confidently incorporate the classic relationship between pink and flowers into your own wedding no matter what the season is. Described as a "dynamic reddish pink," the eye-catching color is sure to add vigor, energy, and empowerment to your wedding celebrations while perfectly complementing you on your big day. Your guests will feed off the color's vibrancy, creating a contagious atmosphere of excitement and joy.
Did you know?
Honeysuckle is a favorite flower of hummingbirds to nectar, but it is the vibrant, lively color, not the sweet fragrance that attracts the birds to the bloom.--NM |
