On a walk to Rome Point in North Kingstown with their yellow lab, Hogan, Amy Maddock and Matthew Oakley found a sandy area, perfect for a beach blanket. While Amy watched Hogan splash and play in the water, Matt slipped the ring on his camera cord and handed the camera to Amy so that she could take a photo of their pup. "As I took the lens cover off the camera, I noticed a diamond ring," Amy says. "Matt dropped down on one knee and proposed. It was low-key and perfect."
Over a picnic spread that same day, a winter wedding took form in Amy's mind. "Newport covered in snow and all lit up at Christmas time is simply beautiful," she says. The ceremony would take place near the home of the bride's parents, Robert and Carol Maddock of Saunderstown, at Christ the King Church in Kingston. The Atlantic Beach Club would host the evening reception: "It boasted the largest dance floor on the Island and I knew that our guests, and myself included, would find that important!" Amy says.
Amy's interpretation of a Newport wedding in December followed a chilly theme. Centerpieces of wintergreens, woven around a crackled glass hurricane vase atop a mirror with votive candles, reflected blue, gold and silver glass ornaments on the tables, which doubled as party favors. A tier of cupcakes with a small cake at the apex, decorated with buttercream frosting and snowflakes, delighted guests. And what would a winter wedding be without classic Christmas tunes? The bride and groom entered the reception hall to Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You."
Guests and the bridal party enjoyed wedding trolley transportation courtesy of Matthew's family business, Viking Tours of Newport. George and Laura Oakley of Middletown were thrilled to court the merry revelers around the City-by-the-Sea in the snow.
Not yet up to their ears in ice, Amy and Matthew headed to their private fireplace at The Mount Washington Resort in Bretton Woods, New Hampshire. The couple now live in North Kingstown.-RC
