Greetings!
Deciding on a venue for your wedding or reception can be tough; there are so many beautiful places in Newport County for a grand soiree. Rosecliff, OceanCliff, Glen Manor House, the list goes on for a waterside wedding. Michele and Michael chose Salve Regina's majestic Ochre Court, read their story, and seek inspiration for your wedding day! NWM |

Michele Packham &
Michael Merrick Ochre Court July 8, 2007
This pair's story begins on the historic courts of Bellevue Avenue's National Tennis Club at the Newport Casino. Michele, an avid court tennis player born in England, was competing on the famous indoor courts when she was later introduced to Michael through a mutual friend. Before long, the couple stood beneath a wintry Christmas sky in Portsmouth and Michael Merrick, son of the late Dr. Robert and Marjorie Merrick of Portsmouth, proposed to Michele Packham, daughter of Susan Thomas of London and James Beresford and Charlene Packham of Newport, atop a jetty amid the ocean's crashing waves. From their Boston residence, the couple's mutual love and history with the City-by-the-Sea compelled them to plan their nuptials weekend at two of the island's cherished venues. They chose Salve Regina University's regal Ochre Court for the ceremony site, as Michele worked in the Residential Life Department, and adds, "We [run] along Cliff Walk and I have always thought [Ochre Court] is such a stunning and grand building and had dreams of being married there." Following the ceremony was a reception along the Sakonnet River, among the blossoming formal gardens of Portsmouth's Glen Manor House. Inside the French-inspired chateau, the tables were adorned with vases of fragrant blue and green hydrangeas, ivory roses and stargazer lilies. Candles sparkled inside hurricane votives while guests were passed hors d'oeuvres of gorgonzola basil purses and Boursin prosciutto pizza. After the attendees feasted on enticing courses, the couple cut their cake trimmed with sage grosgrain ribbon and savored the layered lemon and butter cream slices. It was important for Michele to intertwine bits of her English heritage in the celebration, including the passing of Pimms (a traditional English summer cocktail) and miniature English chocolates. No addition could have been more authentic than the attendance of her 91-year-old English grandmother, who arrived days before the special occasion and stayed to fully experience Aquidneck Island. European tradition continued as the newlyweds stole away on their honeymoon to Italy, though not before a donation was made to the Oncology Unit at St. Anne's Hospital, in honor of the groom's beloved father, in lieu of favors. For those whom could not attend the American wedding, the couple held another wedding celebration in England a month later. When asked what it was about Newport County that made the couple choose it for their locale, Michele says, "Although we live in Boston right now, we look forward to moving back to Newport in the future. We love the community and being close to the ocean."-LC
