Nicole Geisser & Darrell Hallett
OceanCliff |
On their third anniversary, Darrell Hallett planned an elaborate surprise to propose to his girlfriend, Nicole Geisser. The lovely day in June began with beautiful flowers and breakfast, followed by a trip on Darrell's boat to Block Island. There, he had arranged for horseback riding on the beach, and an exquisite picnic lunch at the "Bluffs" topped off by a bottle of Dom Perignon. Of course, Darrell had saved the best for last. Dessert was four huge chocolate-covered strawberries, one word on each, spelling out the question, "Will you marry me?"
Since Newport was the place that had brought the two together, it was only fitting that it be the place where they marry. Nicole and Darrell's love story began with a chance meeting on Thames Street that Nicole says was, "love at first sight." A Newport ceremony would also be near the bride's parents, Michael and Anna Geisser of Warren. When it came to choosing a venue, OceanCliff's sweeping landscape and striking waterfront view presented the perfect backdrop for their "beachy" and romantic evening affair. "It was really about the beautiful location," Nicole says. Nicole's ivory Oleg Cassini gown captured the timeless elegance she had envisioned. With accents of champagne lace under its sweetheart top and Swarovski crystals along the bottom and train, the dress was pinched up for a "very classic romantic evening look," she says. At the reception, tables were themed with photos of the pairs' favorite activities. For a sentimental touch, childhood and engagement photos were also displayed. Splashes of vibrant exotic flowers like birds of paradise and ginger orchids accompanied them, which, when paired with dramatic uplighting, created an unforgettable and striking scene. Since Nicole and Darrell see the Phantom of the Opera every year in New York City, they chose "All I Ask of You," from the musical, for their first dance. Having taken ballroom lessons before the big day, the newlyweds put on their own show as they danced into the night. "Looking forward to their new life together," Nicole and Darrell embarked to Costa Rica for their honeymoon and now reside in Newport. -CM

Choosing a dress that complements all of your bridesmaids may seem impossible, but it doesn't have to be. Kerin Lazzaro, Newport Life Magazine's Marketing and Advertising Coordinator, is to marry Charlie Hamilton on September 3. Lazzaro talks about how she is selecting a dress that can be individualized for each bridesmaid.
Q: What is your strategy for beating the age-old problem of ho-hum bridesmaids' dresses?
A: I'm going on Saturday to window shop. I can't stand the standard styles, and want the girls to look different. My bridesmaids live all over; in Colorado, Florida, there are none from Rhode Island. I found one dress by TwoBirds. You can wrap it in different ways, buy it in one central location, and it comes in different colors. I thought it was going to be easier to coordinate than it is. My bridesmaids are all different shapes and one of them is redhead. Everyone looks different.
Q: What tips could you give to brides interested in picking uniform bridesmaids' dresses?
A: Definitely choose something that flatters their figures. I'm big on wearing the dress again. The bridesmaids are investing at lot of money, so they should be able to wear the dress again. Obviously the bride is important, but keep in mind the bridesmaids are too. I want my bridesmaids to be comfortable and beautiful. I'm open to ideas.
Q: Are there any other tips you can give to brides in planning their wedding?
A: For inspiration, I read wedding blogs and buy magazines. It helps having photos in front of you and different ideas.
