A GREAT GOLF OPPORTUNITY AT OUR DOORSTEP...
|
Many of you may not know but the 2015 U.S. Men's Open will held in Washington State next year at Chambers Bay Golf Course. The course is situated just north of Tacoma, and only a short (2 hour) drive from Port Angeles. The last major golf event held in Washington was the PGA Championship at Sahalee Golf Club in 1998 won by Vijay Singh. Tickets for the 2015 U.S. Open are available on line now, and I would encourage you to check it out! I'm going to go... perhaps I'll see you there?
I thought the description of the course on their web-site summarized the facility nicely!
"With tawny fescue grasses, towering sand dunes, massive fairways, and breathtaking views of the Puget Sound and snow capped Olympic Mountains, Chambers Bay brings the traditions of Scottish linksland to the Pacific Northwest. Located in University Place, Washington, this 18 hole, walking only course provides an authentic links experience for players of every ability".

WHO WAS THE GREAT BOBBY JONES?
|
I think it would be fair to say, Bobby Jones was in the 1920's what Tiger Woods is today. Interestingly, Jones always remained an amateur during his playing career. Some interesting facts about this fascinating and remarkable man:
- Born in 1902 in Atlanta, Georgia, died in 1971
- Jones was 5' 8" tall... 165 pounds
- Jones was a very educated man with a degree in "mechanical engineering" from Georgia Tech, a degree from Harvard in "literature" and a "law" degree from the Emory University of Law. After his retirement from golf, Jones worked as a lawyer in Atlanta, Georgia.
- Jones retired from the game in 1930 at the age of 28. From 1923-1930 Jones won 4 US Opens & 3 British Opens (plus placed 2nd in the US Open 4 times)
- From 1924-1930 Jones won 5 US Amateur titles plus a British Amateur
- Jones was a co-founder of Augusta National Golf Club and the co-creater of the Masters (started 1934)
In all the photos please check out the attire of both Jones & gallery
Famous Bobby Jones quotes...
- Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course... the space between your ears
- The secret of golf is to turn three shots into two
- You swing your best when you have the fewest things to think about
- I always like to see a person stand up to a golf ball as though he were perfectly at home in its presence
- I never learned anything from a match that I won

THE LESSON TEE...THREE SIMPLE "Pre-shot" STRATEGIES... |
Pre-shot Strategy One...
I was giving a playing lesson to a student of mine the other day and thought I might share with you a swing thought worth perhaps consideration. Before each shot he did 2 practice swings; both were excellent... when he set himself to the ball he hit it FAT... how come???? Might I suggest the answer may be found re his inclination to hit "at" the ball, not thinking rather for the club to pass "through" the ball. In addition, it's only an educated guess, but I think most golfers spend too much time contemplating over the shot, but rather should go ahead and hit the ball much like taking another practice swing. A great example to watch is Lee Trevino... he really gets on with it! It is exceptionally easy to fall victim to pondering and thinking too much in the set-up position... I refer to it as the JUNGLE or a MAZE works too! Anyhow, give it a go... it might just work... especially with those fairway woods!
Pre-shot Strategy Two...
I have always been a great advocate of having a pre-shot routine. The one I teach is simple, and every student I instruct goes home with the plan. Step 1.. Set the clubhead at the target, Step 2... Set the feet and ball position, Step 3... Carefully set the hands. Step 4... is optional but a good one... tap your toes for best balance... why... I like this move (of tapping the toes) because it gets the student to sit back just a touch at address. Too many students in my mind are playing from their toes. In addition, if a student cannot tap his toes, it usually identifies the student may be too far from the ball, which is a common error with new players. I believe the butt of the club should be a narrow to wide span of the hand from the body at address for best balance. For confirmation check out some photos of the great players and their address position. Be a copy cat!
Pre-shot Strategy Three...
I do not like any type of contrivance of the head position at address. Some folks like to push their heads down to keep it down. This is a real No-No in my golf world. Yes, there are times a student does lift his or her head anxiously to watch the shot, but more times the topping of the ball is caused from straightening your spin angle through the downswing motion. Put another way, I ask you... "is your head lifting, or being lifted???" The great Tom Watson did an excellent video on this very subject. Check it out below... click it!

OFFICIAL WORLD GOLF RANKINGS...
|
Previously known as the "Sony Rankings", The "Official World Golf Ranking System" was first introduced in 1986. The purpose of the ranking system was to recognize and embrace players who were playing on various tours around the world. Recognized by all four majors, plus the six major tours, the ranking system is used to monitor all players from all parts of the globe. For example, in this years British Open, the top 50 players in the world rankings were given entry into the event; in the 2014 U.S. Open, the top 60 & ties in the OWG rankings were given exemption.
From an historic perspective, the first player in 1986 to win the honours was Bernhard Langer; the current leader is Adam Scott. Previous winners were: (at each year end)
Greg Norman 7x, Seve Ballesteros, Ian Woosman, Nick Faldo 2x, Nick Price, Tiger Woods 12x, Vijay Singh, Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Rory Mcllroy...
The 6 tours which endorse the Rankings are: PGA Tour, European Tour, Asian Tour, PGA Tour of Australasia, Japan Golf Tour & The Sunshine Tour (South Africa)
Current Rankings:
1. Adam Scott, 2. Henrik Stenson, 3. Justin Rose, 4. Bubba Watson, 5. Matt Kucher, 6. Jason Day, 7, Tiger Woods, 8. Rory Mcllroy, 9. Sergio Garcia, 10. Jordan Speith

"Quick fire putting tips"
* Put a line on the ball for directional help... Tiger does it, so should you!
* Set the putter head in place first, then feet, then hands... think percision
* Only move the triangle created by your arms and shoulders for the stroke
* Do not move the legs during trhe stroke... body stays very, very, very quiet
* Do not allow your leading wrist to break down and close the blade.. aka pull
* You MUST like your putter, if not part company and get another!
Summer fun! ... Good Golfing to all!
