Certainly the hot topic of the day is "entrance fees" at private golf clubs.  It's a mighty big issue and one which could and should change the landscape on how private clubs operate for evermore.  To begin, it is no secret the game of golf has been contracting for the past decade.  Rounds are down, membership enrollments especially at private clubs have weakened and balancing revenues to expenses at all facilities has gotten to be a very tough equation.  The hard reality is blending rising costs with declining revenues...a nasty recipe indeed!

It goes without saying, growing a membership is not an easy nor simple task, especially in slow economic times.  Lots of factors come to bear, from age demographics to course appeal, to golf course conditioning etc. etc.  It's all about the net number, are you attracting and retaining more folks than you are losing?  A tough assignment indeed!

I spoke recently with a Director of a local private club and he framed the problem very succinctly; our membership enrollment has weakened and we need to grow our membership ranks.  The dramatic changes we have made in our initiation fee has attracted nearly 75 new enlistees; I agree, it's tough to argue with that success. Nevertheless, short term happiness can sometimes be misleading.  I worry such radical measures may in fact be more radical than needed.  must ask too...how are other neighbouring clubs going to react?  Also it should be noted, do these changes alter the structural dynamic of the

membership population itself, especially when there is such a significant divergence in initiation fees having been paid by fellow members...only time will tell.  Certainly, on a positive note, perhaps the best aspect of these changes is the "degree of affordability" to a greater amount of golfers.

So it's really very simple...golf clubs need a steady "cash flow" to thrive, and a growth in monthly dues is basically the primary fix that will work to cover operating costs.  It should be noted historically most dollars directed to initiation fees are usually ear marked for capital projects.  That being said, I would think most capital projects (like course and clubhouse improvements) will be shelved or postponed for another day.  From where I see it, all private clubs (in my town) currently have 1st class presentations.

Anyhow, hats off to the boards who have been pro-active in addressing this most difficult issue.  It's a very tough decision and as always not all folks will be happy!  Nevertheless, time will only tell as to it's success or failure.  Be assured this is not a local issue, but a world wide phenomena.  Times are changing laddie!  Good luck to all!

I have attached a couple of interesting articles on the subject... (please click)

BE A 'COPY CAT' & IMPROVE YOUR GAME

I was mentioning to a student the other day about using golf images as an instructional aide.  What I am suggesting is try to copy the positions of the great players.  For example I have attached a picture of Tiger addressing the ball.  Get a friend to take a photo of you in the same position and compare the two images.  (a simple
task with today's technology)  Another great image I have attached is that of Tom Watson taking the club away in a one piece manner...get a shot of yourself at that moment and compare.  (A mirror or big window works too!)  Are you finding these positions?  Are you doing much the same thing?  If not, why not?  IT'S FUN TOO!

SWING ANALYSIS OF AUSTRALIAN JASON DAY...

Illustrated below are eight images of Jason Day swinging the driver.  I have listed below 8 comments you might find useful.

Jason Day 2

Jason Day 1

1.  The set-up looks perfectly balanced..even distribution of weight in each leg...no leaning or contrivance.  Athletic position.

2.  Ball is placed off the leading heel with the driver...standard position

3.  The head is looking out to the ball...not down at it!  Notice the straight spine at address...notice the line (added) of the spine angle on the 1st image.

4.  The grip is perfect...We can see two knuckles of the left hand, with the right hand on top of the club.  Ben Hogan said the grip is the heart beat of the golf swing.

5.  The takeaway is done moving the arms and shoulders...notice the width he gets... Width = Power.  A one piece takeaway like the image of Watson above.

6.  The right leg remains flexed and solid(ish) in the back swing...David Leadbetter says weight transfer moves to right heel.  Please note.....notice the relationship of Day's right knee to the tree (marked by the arrow) in the background.

7.  The head remains steady throughout the back swing process.  Note...I have added a line for reference.  Nicklaus said best shots are usually achieved with a steady head.

8.  Length of swing is excellent...in full control of the club...firm left arm...no excess.

CADDIES...$$$...HOW MUCH DO THEY MAKE?

A PGA tour caddy can make several arrangements with a player concerning his salary. Most PGA Tour caddies make between $1000 and $1500 per week, but they also make a percentage of what the player wins in the tournaments. This usually equates to 5 percent of any finish outside the top 10. Players breaking into the top 10, but not winning, will share 7 percent of their prize with their caddies. Winning players generally share 10 percent of the prize with their caddy.

 caddies

Some caddies make no set salary but instead earn 10 percent on all prizes won by their golfer. Other caddies make a higher weekly salary and receive no cut of their golfers' win. However, in these cases the caddy usually receives a yearly or quarterly bonus.   (source Wikipedia)

The World of Steve Williams...TOP GUN...Caddy extraordinaire...a 7 digit income!

Williams is originally from New Zealand.  He has caddied for Peter Thomson, Ian Baker Finch, Greg Norman, Ray Floyd, Tiger Woods and currently Adam Scott.  A block-buster resume.  I have always contended if Williams, or a seasoned caddy had being packing for the Frenchman Jean Van de Velde, he would of won the 1999 British Open.  It is important to note a caddies responsibilities far exceed just carrying the bag; to put it in perspective it's all about passion, trust & partnership.  It is well documented Williams stood next to Tiger like a "pit bull" on watch.

jvdv - under pressure

I have attached the hard to watch (but entertaining) 1999 Van de Velde "meltdown" at Carnoustie.  The whole affair was so unbelievable it is one of those rare moments the vanquished will be better remembered than the victor....Scotsman, Paul Lawrie.
