JACK SAYS... |
The Right Hand Grip...
The right hand grip is primarily held in the fingers. Imagine the way a baseball pitcher generates speed by grasping the ball near the end of his fingers. click the bear
Scott says...I was teaching a first time student the other day and he held the grip as per picture one; a very familiar position. Every shot was going hard low left. I moved his right hand grip on top of the club as show in picture two, and the ball flight was basically straight. In picture three you can see where the correct grip is positioned....in the fingers!

LATEST EDITION TO THE COLLECTION |
As most of you already know, all the golf memorabilia and collectibles I show in my newsletter are part of my personal golf collection. Like all collectors it is tough not to say we are all a tad goofy about our particular collecting passion. For fun I thought I might share with you my latest addition to my collection each month.
The club pictured above is called a Waterfall club; a deep grooved iron. What adds to the appeal of this valuable club it is from the Rosedale Golf Club in Toronto. Rare Irons like these were created primarily to enhance spin and achieve better ball control. To further identify the club, the name Frank Freeman's name is engraved on the back...Frank was the Head Professional at Rosedale in the early 1920's. A cool find! |
SHOOT FOR THE CENTER OF THE GREEN...... WHY? |
During playing lessons with recreational golfers I always tell my students to aim all their full shots at the center of the green. This will maximize the chances of getting on the green. If you will recall during the 2005 PGA Championship, won by Phil Mickelson, when asked about his game plan he said, "I aimed all my shots at the middle of the green". The concept is easy...it's all about getting on the dance floor.

FEATURED CLUB...POSTCARD PICS OF THE MONTH
|
Kelowna Golf Club was first established in 1920 as a nine hole facility with sand greens.
If you have ever had the opportunity to play Kelowna Golf Club, I am sure you will agree, it is a wonderful facility. The golf course is simply stunning surrounding perhaps the most beautiful lake I have ever seen at a golf course. My first chance to play Kelowna was in the 1969 Canadian Junior; I was 16 years old. That was a very big deal to me, playing in my first National Championship. I believe I finished 30th. The winner that year was Ontario native Dale Tallon, later to become the Canucks first draft pick, and eventually the GM of the Chicago Black Hawks.

Anyhow, two years later I had the pleasure of teeing it up in the 1971 Ogopogo Championship, perhaps the best regional event I have ever played in. A great field of players combined with a beautiful golf course, all added up to a great weekend of fun. It was on this weekend I played the most bitter/ sweet round of my golf career. In my second 18 holes of play I had 7 birdies, and eagle and an ace to shoot 70....tough to forget!

THE ART OF PRACTICE
|
It goes without saying; the route to better golf can ONLY be achieved by practice. As Sam Snead said "practice puts brains in your muscles". Here are some ideas you might consider to make your practice time more productive:
- Be physically prepared...do some stretching exercises before commencing hitting balls. All athletes warm up the "body engine"...so should you!
- Prepare your practice area; whether it be on a mat or on the grass, find a spot which appeals to you. If you are on grass, try to find a flat spot.
- Start with short shots and build to long. Tour players begin with a wedge and finish with a driver. Do not allow your practice time to be dominated with the driver; it may be "fun" but not productive. Practice with a Plan!
- Always, always, shoot to a target. Golf is about distance and DIRECTION. Work hard on alignments. If the facility allows, change targets too.
- Try to determine approximately how far you hit each club. This factor is critical on the course when determining distance.
- Spend time working on your basic fundamentals; grip, stance, posture. These key elements must be reviewed and rehearsed over and over to create consistency.
- Lastly , take your time...good practice is never rushed. Have Fun!!!!

Ben Hogan Ken Venturi

Perhaps the man with the greatest and most diligent practice ethic was the great Ben Hogan. It was said when young tour player Ken Venturi was hitting balls at a PGA event, Hogan came up to him and said he was very impressed with his swing. Venturi replied, thank you Mr. Hogan. After a few more balls hit, Hogan continued on by asking "do you practice a lot?"....Venturi replied, "Yes I do Mr. Hogan". Without hesitation Hogan said...."double it". (Venturi was the winner of the 1964 U.S. Open.)

ALIGNMENT AND DRILL...SWEET AND SIMPLE
|
With the addition of alot of new subscribers I decided to run my alignment video again. Please check it out...it will lower your scores and save you golf balls!
I believe good alignment is very achievable for all players if they follow a strict template each time they address the ball. Three very easy steps...
Step 1...Aim the club head at your intended target.
Step 2...Set your feet into position... (Be mindful of your ball position)
Step 3...Secure your hands and be certain they are right!
Go about the process slowly and deliberately. Most golfers rush it, thereby not securing the critical principles of the alignment template.
