JACK SAYS...

bear

On wedge shots from the heavy rough, play the ball back a little towards the right foot to minimize the amount of grass that will intervene between the ball and the clubface.

* * *

I might add, the term flyer lie is an off-shoot from Nicklaus' comments above. When grass gets caught between the club face and the ball at contact, it eliminates the effect of the grooves on the club face, thereby creating less spin on the ball. This in turn can generate excessive flight, and more forward roll when the ball lands.

EDITORS TEE-TIME

Welcome to another edition of Peninsula Golf JournalI hope you enjoy it as much as I do writing it.

This month I am very pleased to announce the launch of my new website: www.scottkeenlysidegolf.com

In addition to information about lessons, you'll find back issues of this newsletter, links to some of my favorite sites, lesson videos, and a special section entirely devoted to golf collectibles, which I'll be updating each month. I'm currently featuring a selection of vintage golf postcards. I hope you'll check it out!

As most of you already know, my new home is Highland Pacific Golf Course. If you've not yet had a chance to visit the facility, it's a real treat.  The range is first class, and the course is a real gem!  My role at HP will be that of a Teaching Professional, and I invite you all to drop by and visit this fine facility.

I know I have a few lessons still outstanding with some of you.  Please contact me, via phone or e-mail, and I will look forward to completing the lessons still on the books.  (I do have a complete record, so please do not hesitate to call.)

Regarding the facility, the driving range has two levels. The lower level is both covered and equipped with "toasty" individual heaters making it an ideal place to practice in the winter months. For lessons, students have the option to hit from superb synthetic mats, or a well groomed grass tee. Top notch short game facilities are also provided.

I look forward to seeing you!

QUOTES OF THE MONTH:

 "LONG DRIVE BLUES"

"Missing a short putt does not mean you have to hit your next drive out of bounds".
~Henry Cotton

"I can airmail the golf ball, but sometimes I don't put the right address on it".
~Jim Dent

"The woods are full of long drivers".

SLOW PLAY, BALL MARKS & DIVOTS

Snail

Perhaps the most talked about etiquette issues in golf. My thoughts...

... If you're playing with folks who are playing slow, talk to them about slow play.  That goes for divots and ball marks too, my most sensitive issue. In many cases most beginner golfers understandably know very little about appropriate etiquette; I think casual indirect conversation is a great way of educating golfers and making the game more fun for all.

Comments like "we had better not hold up the group behind us", or "let's step aside and let the group behind go though", and "let me get your ball mark for you", or "is that your ball mark or mine?" or "you should get one of these repair tools, they work great", and lastly, help them by tossing their divot back to them. Subtle but very effective and non-offensive. Education & communication are the cornerstones of golf etiquette!

PRESIDENTS CUP REVIEW

Presidents cup

I hope you had a chance to watch the PRESIDENTS CUP from Down Under. The golf was certainly noteworthy, but I think the real stories were Tiger Woods performance, and Greg Norman's remarks regarding changes to the team selection system. I  agree with Norman that there should be four Captain's Picks. This would bypass the Keegan Bradley debacle - can you imagine winning the United States PGA Championship, perhaps the most heralded major and not securing a spot on the U.S. team? What a discomforting spot for all concerned...it must have been some phone call from Commissioner Finchem to Bradley.  Ouch!

As for the Tiger Man, is he coming back or what? I have to admit I've been a little hard on Tiger as of late. Like most other golf junkies, my attitude is, TIGER WE NEED YOU, ALL IS FORGIVEN!  So I was relieved when Tiger thrashed Aaron Baddeley in the final matches with 6 birdies through 15 holes - THAT's  the Tiger we know.  We were all starting to feel quite sorry for Tiger with all those sponsors jumping ship. I thought it particularly amusing when they showed a picture in the Toronto Sun of Tiger hugging Fred Couples wearing his magnificent Rolex watch, ( his newest sponsor). Tag Heuer...who?

The whole episode makes one think of that great theme song from the movie Cabaret with Liza Minnelli & Joel Grey....how does that go?  Oh yes!  "Money, money makes the world go round!"

THE GREATEST PUTTING TIP OF ALL

Every time I give a putting lesson I ask my student if he/ she marks a line on their ball for alignment purposes. Ninety plus percent of the time the answer is NO. Believe me the system is a killer on the short putts. Line up the line on the ball on your target line; from that position line up the line on your putter with the line on the ball. If your putter does not have a line...mark one on it. Simple stuff indeed...this method is a total no-brainer, and your putting success ratio will improve dramatically, especially with those nasty little short ones. Guaranteed to lower your scores! TIGER DOES IT, SO SHOULD YOU!

SEASON'S GREETINGS FROM "COWTOWN"

I thought this Calgary Golf & Country Club card from the early 1900's was very apropos given the Christmas and holiday season nearing.  The Calgary club was established in 1911 and designed by the world renowned architect Willie Park Jr.  To confirm the age of the photo, if you look carefully you can see the Model T cars in the lower right side of the card. For those wishing a glimpse of this spectacular course check out www.cgandcc.com.

WALK IN THE PARK

As I have mentioned before as a collector it is always fun to connect various collectibles pertaining to the same subject.  Stanley Park Pitch & Putt is a great example.  If you have not had the pleasure of playing the course it is really a deluxe layout dating back to its start in 1927.  The Park itself dates back to 1888, named after Lord Stanley, the Governor General of Canada; another interesting piece of trivia is Lord Stanley is the name sake for the NHL Stanley Cup.  With reference to the collectibles illustrated, I find the scorecard from 1939 is particularly interesting given they use the term Links.  Also if you will note the Vancouver Sun article of my father winning the Stanley Park Pitch & Putt Championship (1938) is really, really cool.  My father was a huge advocate of my becoming a golf professional.

Scorecard and TeesStanley Park 1

The labeled boxed tees I think are really neat, and the vintage post card depicts nicely the

beauty of the course and park.  Next time you are in Vancouver....check it out, a real treat and something fun to do!
