CN Canadian Women's Open

Two weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit the CN Ladies Canadian Open at Vancouver Club.  Was I impressed or what!   A few tidbits you might find interesting:

  1. Certainly with all the gals I watched, they were hitting their drivers "give or take" 250+ yds.
  2. Contrary to what one might think, most of the golf holes were played from the men's back tees.
  3. My understanding was that 48 of the top 50 players in the world participated...the two that didn't were on the injury list.  Simply a fantastic field and hats off to CN and Golf Canada.
  4. Not to dwell on body shapes or sizes, all the ladies looked to be in 5 Star + physical condition.
  5. The winner Lydia Ko from New Zealand is 15 years old...that's right 15!  (Korean origin)
  6. The winning score was -13 under par over 72 holes.
  7. My understanding is Ko has hit < > 1000 balls a day since she was 6 years old.  Hello!
  8. Lydia Ko was the winner also of the 2012 U.S.G.A. Ladies Amateur.
  9. My recommendation for the tour...they should limit the use of sunglasses; it is very difficult to connect with players when you cannot see their eyes.

It was an excellent day had by all, a beautiful course, great weather; a splendid field of world class players, and best of all, $1.8 million dollars was raised for the Children's Hospital Foundation.

Footnote:  Thought I might pass on....All, that is right, all the ladies have perfect grips like the one I speak of and illustrate in my newsletter.  Also, most certainly a majority of the ladies use the setup, pre-shot routine/ system I recommend as shown in my YouTube video.

JACK SAYS...

bear

Jack says...

For putting... pin in or out?  I like it left in and attended on putts of about 25 feet and longer.
Reason?  Having the pin in the cup strengthens my depth perception and more clearly identifies the location of the target...

holding pin

Scott says...I see golfers asking for the pin out from 30-40-50+ feet away.  Hang on...some golfers want it out from just about everywhere.   Hello!  I ask you, if you can barely see the hole, how can you judge the distance correctly.  Believe me the game is tough enough!  In my interpretation, Jack is telling us to utilize the pin as an aide.  Another quick tip...when you line up your long putt, you can sometimes use the feet of the person holding the pin to establish a target line and reinforce the depth perception re the length of the putt.

LATEST ADDITION TO THE COLLECTION

This 3 Ball putter may not be one of my most significant finds, but an interesting one.  Dating back to perhaps the late 50's, early 60's, I think this design, though one might describe as somewhat crude in form, probably was the inspiration for the Callaway Odyssey and other 2 & 3 ball putters.  Certainly the science is the same, with the 3 lined balls defining and assisting with the alignment, plus the added scientific center of gravity concept in the middle of the face.

The Town of Jasper was established in 1813, by the North West Company and later by the Hudson Bay Company as a Fur Trading Post.   The Park itself was established in 1907; named after Jasper Hawes, an early operator of the Trading Post.

JPL Scorecard

An interesting note is the "Rules of Golf" were governed by the St. Andrews Rules (R&A) until 1952, when the "ruling body" was changed to include both the R&A and the USGA.  This card is dated 1941.  What I find most intriguing about the card is the local rule,

"No Boundaries."

SIX QUICK FIRE GOLF TIPS  (be sure to ask your CPGA Professional)

sequence of golf swing

1.    Take a video of your own swing and compare.  What does it tell you?

2.    Paint a line on your golf ball for putting directional purposes...Tiger does!

3.    If you don't have a hybrid....get one.  It will become your favorite club I promise!

4.    During practice, always aim at a specific target or target line.

5.    If you're putting poorly...change your grip. Try the reverse overlap, or cross handed.

 6.   Play for something, anything...believe me, it will improve your focus!

A quick unforgettable story to tip six.

I recall when I was about twelve years old I played golf (at Hazelmere Golf Club...my Dad was the lawyer for the club) with another lad who was about 4 years older than me.  His name was Tim ...he was a good guy, had a decent game, and liked to gamble like me.  Besides playing golf, we hunted for golf balls a lot together.  Tim always arrived at the club on his motorcycle; I was totally verboten by my father to riding on it with him.

Anyhow, as the story goes I obviously lost my head one summer day as we played for $5 per hole.  I had so much confidence in my game I truly thought I was unbeatable.  Well I lost big time...I think it was for about $60. Where was I going to find $60 bucks, this was 1964.....and he wanted it!  Well what was I to do? .....Did I mention, Tim collected stamps and (un)fortunately my Dad & our family did too.  It all seemed simple enough until my dear mom caught me with the estranged gumbacks.  I can distinctly remember hiding upstairs under my brother John's bed when my Dad got home.  It wasn't long til I could hear my father rise to the occasion.  Didn't have much of a defence besides admitting I had a poor game.  I clearly remember receiving a damn good thrashing .....with regard to the stamps and the $60 bucks...not sure what happened there?  If I recall, oddly enough, I think I noticed a wee smile on my dad's face after punishment time.  He too loved to wager on golf!  Hey!   Like father like son!  Good ol' Dad!
