Rory McIlroy...the new Swoosh guy!

RORYM

I have to admit I was somewhat disappointed the other day hearing Rory McIlroy, the world's #1 player has signed a multi-year contract with American sport giant NIKE. The deal is reported to be worth a near $200 million over a 5-10 year term. So why am I feeling a touch melancholy about the whole exercise?   Well...simply put, the "almighty buck" seems to be what most sports are now all about, and in my mind way too much of it. Hey!  From what I have read, Rory is currently making about $10M+ a year... certainly not chump change by any elite athlete standard!  As golf fans, we can only hope this infusion of unneeded dollars does not spoil his current success, nor his appealing/charismatic character.  In an earlier piece, I made mention I really like these new Irish guys; they are fresh, entertaining, and possess a great foreign rivalry to the sometimes lofty American dominance of the game.

Anyhow, I understand Titleist and Taylor Made had each offered him a paltry $50M. It seems all crazy to me! I find it inconceivable that a 23 year old could and should be confronted with such a momentous life changing decision. I hope the powers to be at Nike explain clearly to Rory what they expect in return...I can only speculate they near own him. I am reminded of an old "soul searching" question which comes to mind... Rory, "are you still the master of your own destiny?"  I recently read in an interview with Rory where he concluded a statement regarding his new corporate marriage by saying..."I just need to keep winning tournaments, and everything will be fine."

ANTIQUE GOLF BAGS...

In my last newsletter I had made mention that golf bags had not been introduced to the game until the 1880's. The "Bussey Bag" registered the first golf bag patent in 1892. An important factor contributing to the size of the golf bag was the number of clubs used.   In the early days of the game, 4, 5 or 7 clubs was considered all the clubs needed to do the task.   Early golf bags were generally made of leather or canvas, or a combination of both. Referred to as stovepipe bags, or quiver bags, the diameter of the round top was generally only 4 or 5 inches in width.

GOLF BAGS

The three examples illustrated above (from my collection) were manufactured by CLIFF & Co. of England. The two bags on the right are a combination of canvas and leather trim; the third bag on the left is solid leather; all three bags have a steel bottom. The bags are all dated to the early 1900's.

JACK SAYS...

 Jack says...

A good start towards improving position play is simply to use your eyes more intelligently. For instance, when you pass a hole you'll be playing later; do you note the pin position?

Scott says...

Further to Jack's comments...when watching a PGA televised event one can clearly see the PGA players visualizing and analyzing the shot which lies before them.   Phil Michelson is an excellent example; yes he does interact well with the galleries, but when it is time to play one can easily see his intense focus. Much like the work of an investigator, all components which can affect the shot are assimilated and appraised as to their value. Club selection is done with extreme care and scrutiny. Such details as pin positions, the line of a putt, weather conditions, location of hazards, and any and all things which can affect the outcome of a shot must not be overlooked when developing shot strategy.   Most importantly, a great deal of valuable information can be learned simply from watching your playing partners execution of shots.

I hold firm on my assertion, golf is a game of SCORE; always remember, being clever and using wise judgment will certainly improve your chances of achieving better scores.

AN INSPIRING IMAGE...

Many years ago, my mother gave me this delightful painting of two children putting on a green. The watercolour was done by Syd Perkins in 1950; the location is Broughty Ferry, Dundee, Scotland. I am particularly drawn to the image because I too had a putting green in my back yard as a youngster.

FEBRUARY...MOON GOLF MONTH

alan_shepard

In 1971 Spalding created a commemorative golf ball celebrating the first golf shot hit on the moon.  It was hit by U.S. astronaut Alan Shepard, using a 6 iron on February 6, 1971.  Hard to believe this happened 42 years ago!

135:08:17 Shepard: (Facing the TV) Houston, while you're looking that up, you might recognize what I have in my hand as the handle for the contingency sample return; it just so happens to have a genuine six iron on the bottom of it. In my left hand, I have a little white pellet that's familiar to millions of Americans. I'll drop it down. Unfortunately, the suit is so stiff, I can't do this with two hands, but I'm going to try a little sand-trap shot here.

Shepard himself never told anybody what brand of ball he used; however, his golf pro knew.

Jack Harden, the pro at Houston's River Oaks Country Club, provided the sawed-off six-iron that Shepard took to the moon. (The club resides at the USGA museum in Far Hills, N.J.) Harden received a shipment of two-piece Surlyn-covered range balls from Spalding in 1971. "They had two blue stripes on them and said PROPERTY OF JACK HARDEN," says Jack Harden Jr., whose father died last August. "Dad knew there'd be extreme temperatures up there, so he gave Shepard some of those durable range balls."       (Source: Wikipedia)
