EDITORS TEE-TIME
|
Last January in my New Year's Edition I made a number of predictions which might be fun to look at...
The Ryder Cup...no question the most exciting golf event I have ever witnessed. I picked the Europeans to win primarily because I really like the European mix of players; they always seem to connect with the spectators, plus their emotional outpouring and spontaneity is totally irresistible. It must be said, the pressure on all players must of been
simply daunting; one could feel the slippage of the US Team down the stretch; for me there were moments it was tough to watch. Bravo to all concerned!
Tiger will win again...Yes he did...not once, but in fact 3 times. I thought Tiger had a splendid year; regardless, I did fall short thinking Tiger would win his 15th major. From an overall standpoint it was a great year for Tiger...he finished overall 2nd in Money @ $6,133,158, 2nd best stroke average on Tour @ 68.904, #1 in FedEx Points, and 3rd in the overall World Ranking. (Rory McIlroy, the world's #1 was the man to beat!)
Belly Putter Debate...Yes, it did get heated up like I suspected. I have attached an article below on this very subject. I believe the controversy is more over the enforcement of the existing rule than it is a rules change. Frankly, I have no problem with the amateur body keeping the long putters, but for the PGA tour guys, forget it!
An emerging Asian Player...I was wrong on this count! I really thought we would have seen an Asian player break out of the pack. Look at the stellar performance of the Asian gals on the LPGA! Regardless, I do think it will happen...with the Asian commitment to practice, and their ability to focus and concentrate...it's only a matter of time!
President Obama will win the 2012 U.S Presidential Election...Some folk's say it was a close race. When I think of a tight match in golf I think of maybe a stroke or two difference in medal play, or maybe winning two and one, or one up in match play. In Electoral College Points Obama beat Romney 332 to 206. You be the judge!
In closing, I thought it was a splendid golf year. I especially like those "Irish Lads".

CHANGES AT THE BEAR...
|

Good-bye to the signature 19th hole...
Over the past few weeks there have been some significant changes at Bear Mountain. The 36 golf course will in time become a 27 hole facility. My understanding is the upper nine, which includes the little feature hole at the top will be converted to real estate, leaving a lower modified Mountain nine, plus the Valley Course open to the public. A big change, but in my mind an understandable one, given the current supply/demand golf ratio in the Capital Region.
Most importantly I hope this new direction and initiative will result in a more stable environment for both residents, tourists and the beautiful Bear Mountain resort. I have attached a recent article which I think nicely outlines the intent. I was very interested to see Jim McLaughlin (a Canadian) of "Troon Golf" has been engaged as a consultant for the project. Jim is a good industry friend of mine and has a wealth of experience; Jim was the creative GM/ Director of Golf in the development of Westwood Plateau in Coquitlam. Good luck to all!

p.s. Some great news for the Bear...Did you notice the overpass and access is now being completed from Hwy 1 to Bear Mountain?

EXTRA EXTRA...READ ALL ABOUT IT!
|
If you will recall in my November newsletter I made mention of the heated debate over belly and long putters. I have attached the news release (dated Wed., Nov. 28th) from the USGA/ R&A for your review. This a BIG deal and has far reaching effects for players on all tours. Nice to see the governing bodies flexing some muscle!

GOLF...ALL PART OF A MINING COMMUNITY
|
The two cards below from the 30's and 40's are of the Timmins Golf Club, in Timmins Ontario. Located in Northern Ontario, The City of Timmins is situated on the Great Canadian Shield. Golf courses like Timmins were originally built to encourage folks to live and work in mining communities as family recreation. Easy to spot, you will notice the rock outcroppings next to the fairway and clubhouse, so consistent with the terrain of the Shield. The Timmins Golf Club was established in 1922 by Hollinger Mines.

The card above is of an event day at the club, with a noted match being played...notice the Union Jack flying above the clubhouse. The course was renamed The Hollinger Golf Club and expanded to an eighteen hole facility in 2001.
The lower card is most interesting showing a threesome of two ladies and a gentlemen playing. I always find it intriguing when I hear folks saying "golf is historically a man's game"....Hey! I'm not so sure; I see a lot of gals playing in the good ol' days.

JACK SAYS
|
Jack says...
Tailwinds, Headwinds & Crosswinds...
You need intelligence and patience to play well in the wind, but most of all you need a strong sense of realism and sure emotional control. Par climbs for all golfers along with wind force. For example, in a 10mph breeze it may still be a Par 72, but in a 30mph or more wind it could be Par 75 or 76.
Scott says...
I have always believed "the wind" is the game's most interesting and challenging contributor. I recall playing in the Manitoba Open in 1971 at Glendale Golf Club in Winnipeg where Day One I hit a wedge to a down wind green for my second shot; Day Two I hit a 3 iron for my second shot. My recommendation for windy conditions is twofold...look carefully at neighboring trees/bushes to ascertain wind direction and speed...make your club selection wisely. Secondly, when hitting into the wind DO NOT try and swing harder. As a general rule, when a golf ball is hit poorly in windy conditions the ball flight is more adversely affected bringing trouble areas more into play. Be clever and play to your strengths...remember it's all about SCORE!
An interesting tidbit about wind conditions and the PGA Tour... you will notice most PGA players before hitting their shots will look above the playing field to the sky to watch the ever present airship above. As a general rule, airships always head into the wind holding a constant position... a great clue to the wind puzzle!

NO KIDDING...WE REALLY NEED YOUR SUPPORT
|
As most are aware I have been heavily involved with the B.C. Golf Museum the past 15 years. Having served as the President and being on the Board for a number of years I have a great passion for the facility. Besides my directorial responsibilities, I "chaired" the Museum's major fundraiser golf tournament in Vancouver for 5 years. The tournament has an annual field of 100+ golfers.
Currently the Golf Museum is seeking NEW members, and we would welcome all those who like ourselves embrace the wonderful history of the game in our province. I ASK YOU, perhaps as a token of receiving and enjoying my newsletter you might consider joining the Museum? As an extra, we currently have a really neat contest for those coming on board. (Contest ends Dec. 31, 2012) Check it out! It goes without saying, these are difficult times in the benevolent world and fundraising is not easy, I can only ask...I hope you might consider?
Sign up of your 2013 BC Golf House membership and be entered to win this cool autographed Greg Norman photo. Click here to register !
Anyhow, in 2004, I chaired the annual Museum golf event at Quilchena Golf & C.C.. I thought as a novel idea I would contact Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer and try to garner their support. I have enclosed below their replies...a very COOL and pleasing moment in my golf life.

GOLF NEWFOUNDLAND STYLE
|
I think Newfoundland must be a magical place? My first golf experience with Newfoundland Golf was in 1969 at the Canadian Junior Championships in Kelowna, British Columbia. I recall being invited to a tournament social being held on Lake Okanagan during the event. I was 16 at the time and remember clearly all the girls asking, who and where are the "Newfie" boys. The next year I was on the B.C. Provincial Team and we played the Canadian Junior in Halifax. Hard to believe (with the close proximity), but at a social held in Dartmouth, the girls were again asking after the "Newfie" boys. The next year, I captained the B.C. Team in Edmonton; you got it ...where are the "Newfie" boys. Fast forward to my days as Head Professional at Eaglecrest some 20 years later, a good number of my Golf Academy students came from Northern Alberta, imports from Newfoundland. I am not sure whether it's their alluring accent, or their wonderful pleasing demeanor, but believe me; it's hard not to like a "Newfie"...
The two early postcards above are of the Bally Haly Golf Links in St. John's, Newfoundland. Established in 1896, Bally Haly is the oldest golf club in Atlantic Canada; this inner city course sports both a stunning golf club, plus a wonderful curling facility.
Notice the "woolly grass cutters" in both postcards!

THE HUMOUR OF BARRON
|
The comic world of the late Sid Barron, the Times Colonist apolitical cartoonist is represented well in these two original artist drawings.
I particularly enjoy the detail work of the announcements in the Victoria Golf Club locker room and the caption from the 6th Tee. Notice the 'hearts and arrow in the tree" and the "bill board announcements" for the locker room.
The caption above reads: "another slice...wonder what he'll blame it on this time,...the beastly weak tea or the confounded crocuses popping up all around us."
The caption above reads: "But dash it all, Faucet...don't you see...it means ballots, polls, closing the pub and all that rot..."
