GOLF IS A CIRCULAR GAME...
|
When I instruct golfers I always tell them golf is a circular game. I thought the MIT postcard below of the golf swing (taken by an Edgerton stroboscopic flash,) illustrates the point nicely.
So what does it all add up to? To start, building energy in your swing, or power generation is a function of a good number of variables...weight transfer, the torquing of the body, plus the multiple power angles created in relation to the club, body, shoulders, arms, and hands. This may seem a little scientific but simply put, a golfer winds up his body, creates energy in the back swing then releases it on the downswing. The speed of the club is related directly to the amount of energy built up in the back swing. It is obvious, the faster the club head can be moved the further the ball will go. In the three pictures below of Tiger, note the start, the mid point and the finish; most importantly notice the swing in relation to the perimeter lines I have applied to the images; it all happens in a well defined, controlled space....very circular indeed!
In closing I thought the swing motion sequence comment provided by Ben Hogan says it best..."On the back swing, the order of movement goes like this: hands, arms, shoulders, hips. on the downswing the order is hips, shoulders, arms and hands.

MORE THAN JUST SWINGING A CLUB
|
It goes without saying the very nature of my profession is to help folks play better and lower their scores. Yes, I fix grips and work a lot on improving swing motions, but there is also a great deal a golfer can do to help themselves. Managing your game and yourself can directly relate to performance! Here are a few interesting tidbits you might consider next time you play...
- Is your equipment ready to go? I instruct a lot of folks whose equipment is not in good working order. If in doubt ask your local pro!
- If you are seeking advice on your game...get good qualified advice from someone who knows the game.
- Before playing, hit a few balls to warm up. This is a tough game from a "cold" start.
- Get clubs you like! Fitted ones even better! Lots to choose from!
- Learn how far you hit each club? It's all about calibration. This is a "key element" to developing a better game.
- Be realistic regarding performance expectations...set reachable goals and work towards that end.
- Get an "official" handicap...this will encourage you to play better and work harder to achieve your goals....a lot more fun too!
- Play "smart golf"....focus on how to save strokes with your shot making...golf is a game of score!
Time for a few brainy Jack Nicklaus quotes...in my opinion, yes indeed, the Greatest Golfer of them all! ( Winner of 18 majors! )
"I never hit a shot without a purpose!"
"Don't be too proud to take lessons. I'm not!"
"Concentration is a fine antidote to anxiety".
"The game is meant to be fun!"
Good luck to all!

THE WORLD OF LEE TREVINO... "Merry Mex"
|
I must admit I have always been a big fan of Lee Trevino. A truly "rags to riches" athlete. In the year 2000, Trevino was ranked 14th (by Golf Digest) in the greatest players of all time category. Trevino's record of accomplishment was simply daunting, winning 6 majors, and sporting a record of 89 professional wins. I thought the comment made by a fellow PGA player was most illuminating..."The only reason Trevino would leave a fairway was to answer the phone". In an interview I saw a number of years ago he attributed a great deal of his success to his ability to hitting fairways. As a ball striker Trevino's tee shot of choice was a fade. Never long off the tee but always in the fairway, Trevino was especially effective on courses demanding driving accuracy. (ie. U.S. Open, PGA Championship)
As a golf instructor I am constantly reviewing instructional material and golf stuff on YouTube. I thought this "very funny" Trevino video below is worth sharing; the subject discussed was the "well publicized" big money matches between Lee Trevino and Ray Floyd before Lee went on tour. (Floyd won 4 majors,66 PGA wins in his career)
Trevino quotes...
"You don't know what pressure is until you've played for $5 a hole with only $2 in your pocket."
"Putts get real difficult the day they hand out the money."
"I've been hit by lightning and been in the Marine Corps for four years. I've traveled the world and been about everywhere you can imagine. There's not anything I'm scared of except my wife."
"If you are caught on a golf course during a storm and are afraid of lightning, hold up a 1-iron. Not even God can hit a 1-iron."
"A hungry dog hunts best".
