My "Crystal Golf Ball" for 2014
1. Yes! It's another Ryder Cup year. The matches this year will be played at the world famous Gleneagles Golf Club, Perthshire, Scotland.
The team captains are Tom Watson (USA), and Paul McGinley (Europe). Dates of the event are Sept. 23-28th. Anything is possible after seeing the unbelievable Ryder Cup finale at Medinah in 2012,.... I am forecasting the U.S. will bring it's AAA game and "prevail".
2. I am looking for Canadian Graham DeLaet of Weyburn Saskatchewan to have a breakout year on the PGA tour and win at least one event.
This guys stats are just too good to hold him back from the winners circle. In 2013 DeLaet ranked 21st on the 2013 PGA schedule and earned him $2.8 million. With the confidence of 2013 to feed on, his game and dollars earned can only improve from here. Hats off to this "Mighty Canuck!" Look for a great year!
3. Tiger Woods the GREAT ONE! Withstanding any unforeseen injuries, I am predicting it will be another great year for Tiger. Yes indeed.... 3 or 4 wins plus
a MAJOR or Two in 2014.
Tiger played great this past year (2013), winning 4 regular Tour events PLUS the Player's Championship. Not to overlook also he won the PGA Player of the Year award... his 11th trip to the podium. There is simply no stopping this TOPGUN... in my opinion, if he putts great, he is "invincible!"
Here is the link to watching and remembering Tiger's 10 greatest shots... (not from majors) Magic Baby!

THE STORY OF BEN HOGAN...
|
Above I have illustrated the most famous photograph in golf; that of Ben Hogan's famous 1 iron to the 18th at Marion in the 1950 U.S. Open. It is one of those remarkable images which tells the complete story. Perfect form and grace combined with the intensity and focus of the gallery creating a spectacular sporting moment in time!
Ben Hogan is considered one of the finest golfers of all time. A native of Fort Worth Texas, Ben Hogan won 68 PGA tour events, included in that number 9 majors. (2 Masters, 5 U.S. Opens, 1 British & 2 PGA Championships) Known for his remarkable ball striking ability and legendary practice ethic, Hogan became a standard and icon of the game. His book "Five Lessons, The Modern Fundamantals of Golf, is arguably the greatest golf publication ever printed; some refer to it as the "bible of golf"; I would strongly recommend my readers to seek out a copy. Excellent illustrations, combined with clear and concise diction make the book easy to read, and most importantly easy to understand.
Some interesting details about Hogan are:
* Hogan was always known as a quiet, gentle, meticulous man... but a furocious competitor
* Like so many others, Hogan started the game as a caddie (at Glen Garden Country Club)
* Byron Nelson was a boyhood friend of Hogan; and fellow caddie and playing companion
* Hogan became a professional golfer in 1930 at age 17
* Hogan served in the U.S. Air Force from 1943-45... rank of lieutenant
* Both Hogan & wife were in a near fatal head-on car accident in 1949 with a bus
* Some made reference to Hogan as the "inventor of practice"
* Hogan during his career was 145-50 pounds, 5'8" tall... nickname... "The Hawk"
* The Ben Hogan Co. was the initial spnosor of the Ben Hogan Golf Tour, which later became the Nationwide Tour....now Web.com Tour
Quote: "There are no shortcuts in the quest for perfection".... Ben Hogan

FINISH YOUR SWING...
|
I am not sure there is a game which embraces the expression "EASIER SAID THAN DONE" better than the game of golf. Certainly, when we watch the great players each weekend on "the telly" they make it seem so simple; it all looks so smooth and rhythmic. I know on the lesson tee I see a lot of folks all tied and tangled up with their swings. Might I suggest thinking about "Finishing your swing". I really like this simple concept, because it promotes the golfer to both accelerate through the ball to reach the desired finishing position, plus delivering greater power through the hit zone. As I have recommended before, do a "COPY CAT" comparison with that of a great player; find that desired (in balance) finishing pose. Once achieved, you might discover it's not as hard to find the appropriate and correct "end of your swing" than you previously thought. I like the logic and concept... if it ends well, something must of be done right to get there! Check out Fred's finish in frame 7... perfect!

BOOK REVIEW
|
 |
The book is called "Golf Annika's Way"; I would recommend it to all golfers as an excellent read. Annika reviews her overall technique, plus there are great images of her grip, stance, and swing. I find the swing sequences especially interesting. As a fun exercise, I would recommend any golfer to take some simple digital camera shots of the various positions in your golf swing, and compare them with Annika. As a golf instructor, I see lots of folks struggling with their game needlessly due to poor grips, uncomfortable and out of balance posture, or major swing flaws. Be your own instructor, or even better see your local CPGA professional and "hook" onto a lesson, or take a "slice" or two out of this great book. For those folks just starting, getting some early help will shorten the learning curve, and ultimately make the game more fun.
|
How about Annika's playing record...Career spanned 1994-2008 on the LPGA Tour... 62 wins plus 10 majors= 72 victories
Trivia...
Was in a Sidney book store the other day and heard Victoria has the highest per capita readership of books in Canada

THE PARLOR PUTTER
|
One of the corner stones of my golf collection is my hard to find Parlor Putter (cigarette) stand. Patented in 1925, the stand was manufactured by the Wellington-Stone Company in Chicago, Illinois. This bronze (coloured) cast iron ashtray stand was designed as an indoor practice device for home or office. Two designs were made, one holding three putters, another just two; mine is the more rare two club model. One of the very cool features about the item is all the golf motifs adorning the structure. In addition distinctive "parlor putters" were part of the elaborate presentation. Please note too, the bottom, or base sports two holes for indoor targets.

FEATURED CLUB...POSTCARD PICS OF THE MONTH

Golf Club St. Marguerite Stn.... Quebec
I must admit I have had some difficulty in researching the facility. Nevertheless I wanted to show you the three postcards I have for the golf club. In addition I thought it might be interesting to show you the message and information on the back of the third card. As I have mentioned before, collecting postcards provides the reader with lots of historical, postal and whimsical information in the written message.
The script reads...
Addressed to Miss D. Owen, N. Wales, Great Britain
