March 2013 - Volume 1

Greetings!

Onsite Training has been keeping me busy and it looks like the year is going to just keep getting busier.  I hope to always have the time to write these articles since completing them helps me to improve.  I hope they help you to do your job better as well.  If you'd like to see me address a specific topic, please contact me to let me know.  And if you enjoy this newsletter, please forward to a coworker.

RCRA Recordkeeping Requirements:  Training

The RCRA regulations require training for LQG's and SQG's but only LQG's are required to keep records of that training.  Find out exactly what is required.  More...

Safety & Security Plans and Training Required by the US DOT

The regulations have been around for more than a decade, but still confusion persists about this "new" aspect of the HMR.  Read this short article to determine which of the three elements (1 plan and 2 types of training) apply to you.  More...

40 CFR 265, Subpart C Preparedness and Prevention - Applicability

A requirement for both LQG's and SQG's of hazardous waste, Subpart C of Part 265 contains specific actions for facilities to take to prepare for and prevent hazardous waste emergencies.  I will deal with the requirements of this subpart one article at a time.  This article:  Determining applicability.

Can Placards be Used in Place of HazMat Labels on a Non-Bulk Packaging?

What at first seemed like a crazy question from one of my training seminar attendees became an opportunity to expand my knowledge of the HMR and learn a valuable lesson about going to others with questions.  Experience it with me in this short article.  More...

Making RCRA Records "Readily Available" During an Inspection

A tough question with, unfortunately, no easy answer and no answer at all in the regulations.  Instead, I had to go back to the Act to find where the authority was extended to US EPA, or their "duly designated" person, to inspect your facility and gain access to records.  Read here to confirm what you already knew.

A Testimonial from Onsite Training

"Effective and in-depth.  Covered some areas, in particular the Emergency Response Guidebook and DOT requirements, that I had not heard at either of my two previous trainings."

State Specific Regulations

This Volume:  Wisconsin! Wisconsin

Not truly an article, but a short presentation I provided at the PFMA Annual Expo in Milwaukee, WI on February 27th.  It summarizes the Wisconsin regulations for the management of hazardous waste, universal waste, and used oil.  More...

Who "Certifies" the Training of a HazMat Employee?

I'm frequently asked if upon completion of my training I will certify that my customer's HazMat Employees have been trained per the regulations.  The answer, contained in this short article, is that I can't; you have to do it.  More...
