April 2012 - Volume 2

Greetings!

By far, the largest source of inspiration for these articles are questions I receive from my training attendees.  Even if you haven't attended one of my training events yet, I will gladly answer any question you may have about the transportation of hazardous materials or the management of hazardous waste.  Please send me your questions and I will do my best to answer them.  Who knows?  Your question might wind up being an article in a future newsletter.

The Household Hazardous Waste Exemption

A question frequently asked by my customers:  "Why all these regulations for the waste I generate at work, but at home I can throw away the same stuff without any restrictions?"  The answer:  The Household Hazardous Waste Exemption of 40 CFR 261.4(b)(1).

A Security Breach v. a Possible Security Threat

Ripped from today's headlines!  I thought the Secret Service scandal a good opportunity to illustrate the difference between these two terms and how you as a shipper or carrier of HazMat must train your HazMat Employees on the requirements of one or both.

What is RCRA Empty?

One of the challenges of emptying containers of hazardous materials is managing the residue remaining in the container.  Must the container be completely empty?  Must it be triple-rinsed?  How much residue is too much?  EPA answers this question with the RCRA Empty Exemption.
