Greetings!
|
On holiday with lots of family last month, my granddaughters wanted to go shopping at a local mall, so I went along to watch. At one point they were busy in a shoe shop so I settled down on an inviting couch in the middle of the mall. All by myself out there, you can guess that I ended up doing some "people watching." The longer I looked, the more depressed I got.
It didn't take long to realize that virtually every body was dressed down--down to the sloppiest quality clothing they could find, down to the least amount of clothing they thought they could get away with. A man sitting at the other end of the comfy couch read my mind, shook his head and said, "It's an eyeful. Why do they all dress like that? Don't they know how bad, how ugly, how stupid theylook?" Hm-m-m, I wonder. So I asked.
"It's cool," answered the first fellow. "It's the style," chimed in another. "It's cheap," admitted one young woman, and still another told me, "It's comfortable." Of course that's what I'd hear. They're stuck, sacrificing style and good sense for the sake of feeling comfortable-physically, psychologically, and socially. The man at the other end of the couch was hanging on every word.
Many couples of all ages were holding hands. Sweet? Sort of, but they all looked equally disheveled. Had they no other choice? Comfortable? Oh yeah, not having to measure up to any level of looking smart, sharp, or stable. "What do you do for work," I asked. "Uh-h-h, I don't," answered a 30-something male. I'm a temp," offered another. Feeling pretty cheeky, I ventured to ask, "Where do you live." "With my folks," grinned one guy. "At the shelter with my girl," and they both grinned. These people haven't got a chance of bettering their looks or their lives, I thought to myself. I was gladly interrupted when called to "Come look," and delighted to see the classic styling of the $29 shoes selected for my supportive approval. The man at the other end of the comfy couch actually looked disappointed as I left. The fun was over and it was back to shopping, the topic for this December Newsletter. Wardrobe Strategy #12 is all about the subject of Smart Shopping.
Sincerely,

Comfort doesn't need to be achieved at the expense of looking sloppy, slovenly, sleazy, or sexual. None of us can afford it. The economy can't afford it. Putting together a good looking outfit doesn't have to cost lots of time or money. The key is a look that fits! Yes, fits your body, your lifestyle, and your personal style. But more specifically, fits who you really want to be, who you really want to be with, where you really want to go and what you really want to do in your life.
Now, I have a feeling that most of you, my

readers, are not so extremely sloppy or sleazy. Many of you read what I write as confirmation of what you already believe and how you already appear--or, you recognize the value of looking sharp and are looking for strategies and steps to make it easier for you to achieve. Even knowing how, however, doesn't always make it happen. So before hitting the end-of-year sales, shop in your closet this season. Get your money's worth from the clothes you already have. Some say they're sick of the clothes they already have. The solution to that is to wear them in new ways. A little re-vamping will make them more attractive to you, save time and money too!
- The suit at the back of your closet can

be split up and worn as separates when paired with something else. - Pair a patterned jacket with a solid color skirt or slacks.
- Pair patterned pants with a cardigan sweater, comfortably belted at the waist.
- Enjoy your jeans and a polo shirt, but dress them up with a blazer.
- Try a shirt that's a bit too small layered under a loose-fitting pullover sweater.
- Wear a dress that's too short as a tunic over pants, or tights if you're trim.
- Layer a pullover sweater over a turtleneck and finish with a piece of favorite jewelry.
- Mix untailored and tailored pieces together, such as a lace or silky ruffle-neck blouse paired with a houndstooth check tailored jacket.
- Wear colors in new combinations, such as gray with cinnamon rust or copper.
- Try olive green with red or burgundy, teal with taupe or apple green, brown with purple, and camel with black. You have options.
-
 | Even your casual clothes can be paired in delightful ways to express the fun-loving you. |
Mix a little velvet with a lot of denim-clean, unfaded denim. Try a little satin with a lot of suede. - Pair brighter colored shoes--cobalt blue, purple, or red--with a black skirt or pants
and shirt or jacket in black, white, or winter-white. - Belt a lightweight boxy jacket into shape.
- Try combining two or three necklaces together, colors and metals in common--such as a grouping of three silver chains. Make one shorter, the next longer and so on, each one fitting nicely into the next. Try a small pearl pendant on a shorter gold chain set into a chest-length multi-pearl necklace with pearls set an inch apart on a gold chain, finished with a long string of pearls looped once or twice. It's beautiful.

Which reminds me, whatever you try in new ways, remember my fashion rule of ONE. One garment style must be dominant or most important. All others must be subordinate or less important. One color must be dominant and all others less important. One texture must be most important and all others less. One pattern must definitely be dominant and any others be subordinate. And within any outfit, create only one dominant focal point to garner all the attention. Any other points of interest must be minor, getting only fleeting attention and then it's back to the main focal point. Stand several feet from a large mirror and check it out. Squint at yourself and the dominant point will pop. You've got it!

Timeless Truth |
Saving money on your clothes doesn't stop with smart shopping. Tapping back into the topic of clothing care treated last month, we must take care of what we buy. Don't over clean, but to really get your money's worth, clean and repair regularly. Put on a romantic holiday movie, put your feet up, and repair a hem or replace a button. The time is right.
If you need a little gift for someone special, send for our small and snazzy "Snag Nab-It" snag repair tool.
It's an absolute necessity for pulling snags through to the inside. Since time is short, call me or Kathy direct at 801-224-1207 and we'll get it in the mail, $5 including U.S. postage. Put it to work and you won't miss a minute of your movie.
