Conselle Fashion & Image Newsletter

From Image Expert,

Judith Rasband, AICI CIM

Greetings!

It's been my privilege to host another group of students arriving from India this month.  Coming from several cities across India, they come eager to advance their knowledge in clothing design, image management, and wardrobe styling.  These students are so enthusiastic about advancing themselves, they drive me to deliver.

Members of the group have told me their major "take-away" is to become more aware of the individual needs of the client.  And this is of course exactly what we need to do regarding our awareness of our own clothing and image needs.  It's certainly applicable this month as I focus on Conselle's Wardrobe Strategy #9, Cluster Your Clothes.  While we could each begin building a cluster of clothes with the same basic shirt, none of us would end up with the same cluster of clothes because we each have our own individual needs and personal style.

Sincerely,

Featured Article: Strategy For Shopping With A Plan

From previous September Newsletters, you may remember that a cluster of clothes is simply a small group of clothes selected and coordinated to meet the needs of one specific person.  With that in mind, today I put together a cluster for one of my Indian students.  Not planning to break the bank, we went into Christopher & Banks.  While everything in the store is reasonably priced, today everything was 25% off.  Being very selective, the source of inspiration for the color scheme of the cluster was a paisley print skirt in burgundy, black, a little beige, brown, and rust.  The colors present in the skirt repeated her personal coloring perfectly.

  • The burgundy repeated her cheek and lip coloration.
  • The brown repeated her eye color and rust repeated her cinnamon skin coloration.
  • Of course the black repeated her very dark hair coloration.

She was going to be immediately part of the color scheme with the clothes.  The softly flared skirt shape repeated and accommodated her triangular figure type, wider across the hip and thigh area.  She appeared instantly slimmer.

To fill out the cluster, it took only minutes to locate a basic black jacket, burgundy and rust colored tops, burgundy and black slacks, narrow black and a cinnamon leather belts, and a necklace in soft rose-burgundy tones.  Adding a surprise element, I picked out an olive green sport shirt and tee to pair with both pants -- in a naturally woodsy color harmonizing with her skin, eye, and hair coloration. That's eight easy pieces plus accessories that will mix with other black clothes and shoes she already has at home.  She looked absolutely beautiful and she was thrilled!

Cluster from Peruvian Connection

Success stories like this are typical when you're shopping with a cluster in mind.  Some clusters come together quickly, while others are assembled over weeks or months.  Early in the fall is the best time to see whole cluster lines of clothes available in stores -- department and designer stores, chain and single brand stores, including some outlet stores.  There are clusters out there to be seen in virtually every personal style.  Single brand clusters range from 5 to 12 pieces, with each piece distinctly different and combining into many different looks for many different moods and occasions.  While you don't generally buy into a whole brand cluster, you'll certainly get the idea.  Don't limit yourself to looking in just one store.  Get yourself into a variety of stores so you'll be exposed to something new to you.  If you don't see what you like in stores, get into clothing catalogs.

At Conselle, we have a Fashion Catalog Directory available for sale.  The Directory lists women's, men's, and children's catalogs with the price range, size range, occasions, and personal style types the catalog caters to.  Some catalogs feature whole clusters including some accessories.  If not pictured together, coordinating pieces may be spaced
throughout the catalog.  Thumb through the pages.  Pull out pages and put together a terrific cluster in the comfort of your favorite big chair.

The cluster concept applies wonderfully to menswear as well. A man's cluster may include a necktie.  A man asked me just last week, "Are ties are in or out?"  Don't let the dress down trend limit your options -- a tie should always be an option.  A man might choose to wear a tie anytime he wants to communicate a more formal, dressy, creative, or handsome look.  If you're going to a dress smart office, wear a tie.  You can always remove the tie if the mood or occasion turns out to be more relaxed.  A pocket square is another menswear option for a classy or creative polished look without a tie.  You've got options!

To read related information about clusters in dress and image, with instructions and examples regarding people just like you, order Conselle's wardrobe strategy Book #9, Cluster Your Clothes for $27.97.  You'll find charts that will summarize the information and simplify your learning and application.  Order through Conselle's Store or call 801-224-1207 and order directly through Kathy.  Order Cluster Your Clothes.

Timeless Truth

You'll love the ease of traveling with a cluster of clothes!  When I traveled to Los Angeles for three days, I packed three tops, two bottoms, and a jacket into my roll-on bag.  To get the most mileage out of tops, it's best to make one top a pullover and one a button-front shirt to double as a shirt-jac.

Some of my favorite travel pieces are Chico's slinky "Travelers."  Made of acetate and spandex, they are wrinkle free and have enough ease in the fit for cool comfort and a dress slim look.  Easily replaceable, slinky is also available through Draper's and Damon's catalog and assorted boutiques.

Don't get hung up on the supposed top five or fifteen "must-have" pieces of the season.  What's in or out depends on who's talking or writing.

  • Colors of the season are said to be navy, green, orange, gray, cobalt blue, or burgundy.  Suit yourself.
  • Shorter peplums are popular, but so are longer tunics.  Take your pick.
  • You can keep warm in a poncho or a parka.  Pick what you like.
  • Wear cropped pants or tailored trousers, stockings or no stockings, flats, boots, or heels. (But definitely pass on the black knee-high stockings they're showing with short skirts.)
  • Styles are geometric, futuristic, vintage, Western, baroque, military, and equestrian.
  • Hems are mini, maxi, fishtail skirt -- high-in-front-long-in-back.
You name it, you can get it -- or I can find it for you.  But more importantly, what tugs at your heart strings or simply meets your needs?  Regardless of the season, that's what you need to know.

8 Easy Pieces Cluster

As image professionals, it's smart to practice what we preach.  Build clusters of clothes for yourself.  Let your clients see you wearing cluster pieces in classic and creative ways.  Use clusters to display and/or demonstrate the strategy in media interviews, classes, seminars, and workshops.  If a picture is worth a thousand words, a clever cluster equals a whole chapter.  Two clusters equal two chapters and so on, each reflecting different facets of your lifestyle and/or personal style.

If you do it for yourself, others will want to hire you to have you to do it for them too.  Clustering pays off!

Tips for a Fabulous Fit -- Dress Slim

Layered lightweight cluster pieces are key to keeping your cool and dressing slim.  My favorite layering pieces are longer jackets, vests, tunics, and dusters (pictured above).  For best results, you want the lightweight layers to skim smoothly over your body, nothing fitting too tight on the body and revealing distracting body bulges.  Worn open, layering pieces create a center front opening, and when worn with a contrasting color underneath, draws attention inward, away from the body outline and visually slimming your figure as a result.

In Closing

Whether it's a denim cluster, a leadership or professional cluster, an evening or a travel cluster, you look and feel terrific when you wear clothes that truly meet your needs in classic and creative ways. Clustering saves you time and money, makes dressing easier and more versatile, and even inspires compliments! If I can help you create your own cluster, give me a call or write.  Better yet, join us at a Style For Life image enhancement retreat.  You have options.

Sincerely,
